Someone might want to tell Buck that a pitcher with pro potential pitching through a broken rib in Koshien is not a good thing. It's endemic of the fact that there are HS coaches who push their players with disregard for their health because the tournament means more for their/the school's profile than it does for the individual player. Famously Daisuke Matsuzaka threw nearly 400 pitches in two days during his Koshien run (this is in addition to pitching in relief the day after that and then throwing a complete game no-hitter a few days after that. And that's not even the most. There are stories of pitchers throwing almost 900 to almost a freaking thousand pitches over the span of a couple weeks, pitching 6 consecutive complete games, most of them no more than a day or two apart.

First start was first half Kikuchi. Second start is second half Kikuchi.

Another year, another round of Nemesis endlessly harping on Buck, lol.

Did Danny Jansen just hit a home run?
Someone must have got the bright idea to tell Jansen to try hitting the ball directly at people in the outfield stands for a change rather than directly at opposing fielders.

I'm surprised it took so long.

Nem, if you had to keep only one of Moreno or Martinez, who would you keep?

Oh, I can answer that. Moreno, no contest. Offensive production from the catching spot is currently a black hole and I doubt Reese will keep getting lucky forever. Kirk looks nice but he's a sore foot away from being so slow he'd have to hit home runs every at bat to avoid being thrown out.

Martinez looks terrific but the Jays are currently overloaded with infield prospects. They now have a perfectly good 3B that should be good for 5 years or so, and they have young, highly controllable good looking players at every infield position with prospects on the way. I know a lot of people don't like Biggio, but he had a lot of bad luck last year and umps hate him, so there's still a chance, and Espinal has been a nice surprise so far. And for all of Martinez's power, he hasn't hit for high average yet, nor has he hit at a high level (unlike Moreno who raked in the AFL).

The real answer is both but if it was a 'gun to your head you have to pick only one, sophie's choice style' sort of thing then it's Moreno, no question. He's more highly regarded and he plays an infinitely more valuable position when it comes to getting that level of offensive production. I'm not saying that talented infielders are replaceable, but you can find them more easily than you can a catcher. Hell, the Jays already have a big batch of talented middle infielders in the system like Leo Jimenez, Rikelvin DeCastro, Manny Beltre, Miguel Hiraldo, Jordan Groshans, etc where it's not given all of them will become something, but there's a decent chance that at least one of them will take a step forward and be a good to great 2B/SS/3B. the Jays could stand to absorb the loss of Martinez if it was absolutely necessary.

Meanwhile there are very few players around baseball who offer what Moreno does as a bat playing catcher while also being at least a solid defender too. he has the tools and makeup to be special at a position where special players are vanishingly rare.
