These days, Slovakia is commemorating the 20th anniversary of its only World Championships gold medal so far.

Can you spot the 6 ex-Kings in both pictures? This might be tough, and only hardcore Kings fans will get it right without googling it! (The current picture is missing one of the six.)

Those four were the easy ones.

The fifth one will be tough.

The sixth (present in both pictures) will be nigh-impossible to guess. (I ask Slovak Kings fans to refrain from posting the answer here for a bit.) :naughty: Hint: his son is draft-eligible in 2023 and is ranked pretty high by the scouts. Plays the same position as dad.

Satan is in the front yeah? Those eyebrows. Isn't that Bondra as well?

The only other guys I can think of around that time period are Dimitra, maybe Gaborik, but I would recognize both. Is that Nagy in the back?

LA Kings legend Martin Strbak must be in that group.

Absolutely! I mean, who could forget about the 9th round Kings draft pick from 1993, who played all of 5 games for the Kings, scoring 2 goals (that is impressive)? His son Maxim could be drafted higher than the 9th round next year.

A different question is, where in the 2 pictures is Štrbák located. :D Hint: he's 6 ft 3 in tall.

Hint on the 5th ex-King, missing in the current picture: I heard that Auston Matthews of all people had some good things to say about him! o_O

PS: I will later post the full answer here.

Ladislav Nagy is in this photo?!? Which one is he?!
I'm pretty sure the guy in the back with his arm around the blond guy is Nagy. In the picture he's to his left.

Edit: I don't see him in the present photo, but he's probably the one Matthews would mention, seeing how he was a Coyotes fan growing up.

Alright, the 6 Golden (ex)Kings are (in alphabetical order):

* Michal Handzuš (3rd from left in bottom row in new picture; lying on the ice, 1st from right in old picture; freshly elected to Hockey Slovakia's governing body, mostly works with youth hockey nowadays, but also had a brief stint with Craig Ramsey as Slovakia's national team coach & could perhaps one day be Ramsay's successor)

* Ladislav Nagy (missing in new picture; 2nd to the right of Lubo in top row in old picture, with his elbow on Bartečko's shoulder)

* Ziggy Pálffy (3rd from right in top row in new picture; 1st player from left in top row in old picture)

* Martin Štrbák (tallest guy in mid-top row in both pictures)

* Jozef Stümpel (1st from left in top row in new picture; middle row, just below Štrbák, in old picture, his face partially obstructed by Peter Bondra; won the crucial final defensive zone face-off in the gold medal game as Russia, with empty net, was pressing for the equalizer; whenever I hear the name Stümpel, I think of that particular face-off; and, of course, of the Kings' upset of Detroit back in 2001)

* Lubo Višovský (4th from left in top row in new picture; 2nd from left in top row in old picture, just below Ziggy)

Other non-Kings notables in the pictures:

* Peter Bondra (scored Golden Goal in gold medal game against Russia; missing in new picture; to the right of the cup in old picture, just below Štrbák and obstructing Stümpel)

* Miro Šatan íteam captain and the tourney's MVP back then, president of Hockey Slovakia today, freshly re-elected; he posted the new picture to his Twitter account yesterday; sitting to the right of the cup in new picture; lying on the ice below the cup in old picture)

* NHL Hall of Famer Peter Šťastný (father of the Jets' Paul; team GM back then; sitting to the left of the cup in new picture; squatting 2nd from right in bottom row in old picture). The old gentleman in the wheelchair (missing in old picture) is Vladimír Šťastný (aged 77 today), goaltending coach 20 years ago; one of 2 Šťastný brothers who did not defect to America during Communism, as opposed to the famous (younger) 3 Šťastný brothers.

Oh, how can we forget about the great Ladislav Nagy. Matthews must've been a fan when he was with the Coyotes.
I don't see him in the present photo, but he's probably the one Matthews would mention, seeing how he was a Coyotes fan growing up.

Yup, that's what I heard. Nagy was apparently the Coyotes' top offensive threat when Matthews was a young boy. :D

Too bad Demitra isn't here anymore to be in that picture.

It's a tragedy, but he couldn't be in the picture even if he was still alive. 😢 He was playing in the NHL play-offs when the tournament was taking place. Same reason why Gáborík can't be in the picture. (Or Hossa and Chára.)

Man Palffy is looking rough.

I'm pleasantly surprised he's in the new picture at all. He reportedly has lots of disagreements with almost everyone else, especially regarding politics. :cf:

Isn't that Bondra as well?

Yeah, see above. It was exactly 20 years ago yesterday when he scored that Golden Goal, the most famous goal in Slovak hockey history to date. He made it 4-3 with 100 seconds left in the gold medal game against Russia. The pass came from Ziggy Pálffy:

Yeah they had some solid squads. Looking back at that roster, Lots of guys like Lintner, Petrovicky, and Bartecko who were AHL/NHL tweeners, but definitely had the chops to play in the big league. You heard their names called enough that they were making an impact on games.

If Halak would have been born a few years earlier, or even Budaj, they would have been a force internationally for a spelll

Well, they did have something that's dubbed the "Golden Era" over here:

* silver at the Worlds in 2000
* gold in 2002
* bronze in 2003
* group winner at the 2006 Olympics (5 straight wins including defeating Russia, the US, and Sweden – only to lose the quarterfinals match against the Czechs)

Then the "old guard" gave it two more tries before riding off into the sunset:

* 4th place at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver (Halák was there; Slovakia eliminated Russia with all its superstars from the tournament, and Canada barely survived the semifinals, with Luongo's memorable last-second save against Demitra who had a gaping open net in front of him to score the equalizer; weirdly enough, they were teammates for the Canucks that season)

* silver at the Worlds in 2012 (featuring Chára, Handzuš, Šatan, Sekera, and Tatar)

Now there's this year's bronze at the (minor-league) Olympics, powered by Slafkovský, who should be drafted top 5 or possibly top 2 this summer, along with the defenseman Nemec, so perhaps there are better times ahead.

I'm sorry the Kings chose not to suck in this particular season, given that there will likely be 2 Slovak players drafted in the top 5... (Then again, Nemec is yet another right-handed defenseman and Kings don't need those.)

2 more Slovak forwards are likely to be drafted pretty high this summer, Mešár and Sýkora. It would be nice if the Kings snagged one or both of them.

As to Štrbák's son (draft-eligible next year) and Chromiak's younger brother Jakub (draft-eligible in 2024), they're both right-handed defensemen as well, so I guess no interest from the Kings. (They say Jakub Chromiak might be drafted as high or even higher than Martin, but it's early.)
