This one could be the right year for a Russian Team to win the Spengler Cup. Last one was CSKA in 1991 with coach Viktor Tichnov. I was really impressed by Travis Scott (39 saves) very good game last night.

What is this tourny. I have heard of it in the past but do not know a lot about it. What are the ages and team make up?

The Spengler Cup is a tournament that takes place in the last week of the year with the final likely played on Dec 31st.

The tournament has a long tradition (started in the 1920s or so) and takes place every year. AFAIK 5 teams are participating, among them is Team Canada which consists of players who play regularly in Switzerland or maybe Germany. Other teams this year are HC Davos (Swiss champion), Sparta Prag, Metallurg Magnitogorsk and Eisbären Berlin (German champion). I don't know exactly how the teams are picked, but the teams are among the best in Europe.

Canada won today and if they beat Berlin on Thursday, most likely play in the gold medal game on Saturday, probably against Russia.

I don't lke how MMG is playing - slow, sloppy, poor passing game, uncharacteristic of them. And this happens every time they go to Spengler Cup. There's a theory in Russia that they always disappear because they wane away in the high altitude conditions.... I don't know how correct this is.

Travis Scott (G) was awesome for HC Metallurg Magnitogorsk, heh, didn't know former Maple Leaf Anders Eriksson played for them.

He actually played for the Springfield Falcons but was an enhancement player for Magnitogorsk (Every team on the Spengler Cup have some of these additional players, mostly players from the Swiss NLA)

But hockeydb says he's not longer on the Falcons roster, maybe he changed clubs now? :dunno:

Eriksson was playing in Springfield on a PTO (try-out contract) and decided to play in Russia so he was released on 12/20.

Sportsnet has the final on at 1:30MT (3:30 ET). I'd gather that it is being shown live since it is on at the same time in all regions.

I don't know much about this tournament either. Compared to the juniors, are any of these players from team Canada in this tournament NHL bound?

No. It's mainly for players who play in Europe, although several players are on loan from NHL teams, the biggest names probably being Andy Chiodo, Ian White, Doug Lynch, and Brett Skinner.
