Great, they got cap space/a second round draft picik/and a bottom 6 player for a guaranteed 1st liner who is a great PP/PK player.

That isn't a winning trade 100% of the time. Short term or long term, no matter the context of future players who will take up that cap space.

Look, I love Buch as much as the next guy but he wasn't ever a guaranteed 1st line player for us. You can disagree with DQ all you want, but he was bumped off the first line many many times in his career here and rightfully so.

Buchnevich produced/played like a first line player throughout Quinn's tenure and despite Quinn's handling :dunno:

Re Buchnevich. I personally wasn't overly excited about giving Buch almost 6 mill when we have Kreider signed, Panarin, Kakko Lafreniere and Kravtsov here as wingers. I think that was the reason for the trade, maybe the return was underwhelming but I'm sure they took the best deal they could get. I like Buch but ill take Goodrow's cap, Blais and the 2nd pick over him in that scenario. I just think at this point we needed two guys like that in the lineup.

Disagree on the 18/19 season, 19/20 was borderline points wise but he wasn't the well rounded player we saw in 20/21 that everyone is outraged over losing.

Last season was his best and closest bid to legit 1RW, but that is far from being able to safely label him a guaranteed 1st line wing.

Buch's problem here was that he was the most replaceable East/West player on a team full of East/West players. I think we are forgetting how frustrating he was with the extra pass through a clogged slot. Despite being told to get pucks on net repeatedly, he ALWAYS forced the extra slot pass. Always.

OK... I guess my issue is they wait until the last second to make the trade, or in Kreider's case not.

I understand the theory that teams should up the ante, but sometimes making the deal when ur not forced to is the right play.

For both Buch and Kreider I feel that the patient approach was the wrong one. Esp given the @Edge reveal of what was offered for Kreider and if you deal Buch w/1yr and RFA after, you'd return more IMO

But what's done is done...

"makes much more sense to live in the present tense"

ok i need to know what was on the table for krieder?

Shortened season Buch and 82 game Buch are different guys.
No doubt Buch got better each year, but he was also known to go for long stretches of the scoreboard. I don’t think we were the only team leery of giving him 6 mill per for multiple years.
Especially when you factor in Kreider/Panarin deals and all of the young ammunition we have on the wings.
I really thought EDM would go hard after him, he compliment MCDavid/Drai very well. They knew getting a Hyman type player was their first priority, but it seems to me they rather have RNH resigned then Buch because of the being a more proven winger over a similar sample size.
There were also other good options available via trade and UFA at wing in the offseason. That imo also impacted his value a lot.
Reinhart asked out, Hoffman/Toffoli/ etc to name a few.

If Kinkaid clears, try to pry Lawson Crouse from Arizona. Georgiev, Gauthier plus something small gets done in a minute. Stick him between Blais and Reaves on the 4th line. That is nasty stuff. Rooney and Hunt as spares. Profit. 1st, Chytil, Jones (looking great), Henriksson (Detroit likes him and is patient, I know / Raymond - Henriksson - Rasmussen an interesting future DRW line?), Hajek for Larkin and a couple of lifetime AHL scrubs. Profit more...

Can Crouse play center?

Despite Quinn’s handling? If there is one guy on the NYR’s who should kiss Quinn’s feet it’s Buchnevich. Quinn stapled Buch to Zibanejad on the top line for 3 years straight while also giving him a chance to prove himself on the PK.

Id trade Georgiev in a nanosecond for a half decent asset. Kinkaid could probably match AG’s numbers then you just grab another goalie on waivers for depth.

Haha. Indeed. I didn’t even think of that. Actually a number of guys owe Quinn a beer.
