Carolina has to give him a QO of 6.1m next summer if they don't sign him to an extension. And why would Kotkaniemi sign for less if he has either a 6.1m QO coming up or the opportunity to go the UFA route at age 22, signing with whoever he wants?
Because the money he will get on a multi-year deal, even if the AAV is lower, will almost certainly be more than 6.1 mil. If they offer him 6 mil per for 4 years, he's going to take it. If they offer him 1 mil per for 4 years, he's not going to take it. So there is a line between those 2 points where a deal will be acceptable. Exactly where that line is will be up to Kotkaniemi, assuming of course that he doesn't break out and become worthy of a 6.1 mil AAV. If he does that, I'm sure Carolina will have no issue giving him the QO.
