As of this morning the Bruins sit 5th (!) in PP and 3rd on PK in the league.

I can only imagine how an improved power play can help the team for the rest of the regular season and a hopefully long playoff run - great to see it finally clicking again.

Nice to see and certainly long overdue...I think we are seeing how much difference a good PP, combined with a top-flight PK, can make for a team. It's nice not to have to scrap and claw for every goal, and it's nice not to have our PP be a huge momentum killer for us and boost for the other team. Seeing the results, it would be difficult for anyone to say that the PP does not matter at this point.

The B's have had a good power play and penalty killing teams this season! The only thing I would do differently is the Bruins need to shoot the puck more when there in the offensive zone on the power play. They need to center the puck on passing plays and then shoot!

If you told me this in October, I'd tell you that you forgot the 2 in front of the 5... Smith, Soderberg, and Spooner in particular have been monsters on the PP as of late. This is without Dougie and Loui, as well.

We also had some phenomenal penalty killing with Paille, Dougie, McQuaid, and Loui out for weeks at a time. Extremely impressive how this team has gotten around injuries.

Considering all the close games and injuries the PP has been one reason why the Bruins are still rolling along.

Krug on the point and chara in front have helped a great deal on the first unit. While soda and Smith have been great on the second unit.

It's amazing the pp is finally something to fear. And the pk is still going strong even with all the injuries.

How can they be the #3 ranked PK without their defensive specialist? It's mayhem:sarcasm:

The Power Play

The Power Play has been the Bruins' weakest aspect of their game for several years now, even been historically bad at certain points.

The move of taking Chara off the point and moving him to the front of the net was widely regarded as the right move, and it has appeared to pay off. Chara already has 6 power play goals, putting him on pace to top the 11 he had in his Norris trophy season.

Despite still being dead last in PP opportunities - 106, a whopping 51 behind 1st place San Jose in the same GP - the Bruins have the 6th ranked PP in the league at 21.7%. If the season ended today, it would be their best efficiency rating since their statistically fantastic 2008-09 regular season.

Do you have confidence when the Bruins' PP unit takes the ice? Should Geoff Ward still be fired? How do you fix the Bruins inability to generate power plays?

I don't think the Bruins should generate power plays. I hate the diving and acting players go through to generate a man advantage.

When they do get in that position I'm glad to see the offence the new players are bringing to this team. Chara in front of the net has been a big plus, instead of having him blast from the point. Geoff Ward has moulded the PP unit to take advantage of the mobility of Krug, Warsofsky (before he was reassigned), Bartkowski, Hamilton and others.

Who ever suggested firing Geoff Ward?

When Loui gets back the PP will include some great options for Claude, Geoff and the staff.

I have confidence in the Bruins Power Play. They just need to shoot the puck more and pass it less. If anything they need to center the puck and shoot it for the best chance of scoring the power play goals.

The PP also sustains pressure this year & stays in the offensive zone a fair bit, actually forcing the opposition goalies to make saves....apart from Reilly Smith, the PP is the most pleasant surprise for me this year.

holy hell, I've been sleeping under a rock I guess. Bruins have the #1 ranked PK in the league by %?

If that PP% can nudge up to 22% from 20% and the PK maintains, you'd have a puncher's chance. I'm surprised by that PK%, hadn't been paying attention.

Their PP percentage in the last 10 games or so has been lethal...I forget what they said but believe it is in the mid 30s. They are slowly climbing. They were almost at the bottom of the pile not that long ago. Great to see!

There's an adage that a top 5 PP and a top 5 PK will get you through any series (Caps have both). at 22% for the PP, we'd be top 5 in both. Seems crazy to contemplate.

Really lends itself to how much work we have to do 5 on 5 though.

I started reading from the top of this thread and started seeing names like Soderberg and Smith and was so confused.

Highest in the league since January I saw, about 36%.
