Sophomore season: Improved, normed, or slumped?

So now that the season is about 2/3 of the way through, we probably have a reasonably accurate picture of sophomore seasons.

Who has upped their game, stayed on par, or slumped?

I think Tyler Johnson has really upped his game this year. Bonkers to see that he's currently keeping up with some really elite company this year. If there was a sophomore version of the Calder, I think he'd be the front-runner.

Homer vote here, but Hampus Lindholm as been as solid as his rookie season so far. He's been our best defenceman on most nights (on account of injuries/mumps and Fowler's disappearing act) paired with a revolving door of partners, and he's seeing a good amount of time in all situations. (I could easily say Jacob Trouba for this spot. It's such a shame injuries have taken a chunk of this year, but he's also on course for a great sophomore season.)

As for the dreaded sophomore slump, I'd have to go with Tomas Hertl (MacKinnon was another choice, but I called Hertl's slump last year, so I'm gonna have a little bit of fun with this). I don't know if his injury from last year is messing with his game this year (and the Sharks aren't too hot this year either), but his play right now is a far cry from last year. He was 8th among rookies in goal scoring last year with 15, and only played 37 games (to give you a sense of scale, MacKinnon and Johnson led with 24...in 82 games).

Tatar has been much better his sophomore year. Nyquist has been slightly worse, but I think that has a lot to do with teams focusing on him while Tatar gets secondary matchups usually.

Johnson, Palat, and Kucherov have all improved significantly from their rookie seasons.

Not a Flames fan, but Sean Monahan has taken strides forward this year into becoming a top centre. He's put head-to-head against the game's top centres now and matches them every night. Will be a top centre in this league for a long time.

Since being moved to center Hertl's play has greatly improved. His extra slow start was due to his injury (didn't get a full off season to prepare) and because he started the season on a line with Thornton-Pavelski, where neither of them wanted to give him the puck.

He didn't fit that original line at all. They had no forechecker and thornton and pavelski like playing pass with one another.

Check him out in his past few games he has been good.

I would say Kreider if he didn't have a god awful stretch of sub-NHL hockey in late November-Mid December.

With Nyquist, I think it has to do with how strong he finished last year. I mean he's leading the Wings in PP goals (I think) and T-3rd (with Tatar) in points. I don't think many expected him to do as well as he did for the 2nd half of last season. He's about where I thought h'd be this year.

Rielly has had a solid sophomore season after a good rookie season last year.

In the first half of this season, he was playing a safe and sound defensive game most of the time and not doing much offensively, I would peg his play as average up till this point. However, ever since Carlyle got fired, he has been on a whole another level, showing flashes of brilliance, frequently. I think it's truly because of the increased ice-time and confidence. Horachek basically gave him a free leach to play however he wants and he is responding well by taking off.

Lindholm. Improved up until the last three games. Something looks off
But overall on the year he's been one of our best defensemen.

Vatanen: improved offensively. Only slightly defensively. Still needs work there.

Andersen: more of the same really. He needed some time in Norfolk to ready his game for starting duties last year and that's it. I wouldn't say he's too much better this year as he can still be inconsistent but he's more reliable now than Hiller started to be.

Since people already mentioned Nyquist and Tatar, I'll say that Riley Sheahan has definitely improved as well - with more untapped potential.

Seth Jones has more-or-less stayed the same with flashes of amazing-ness. He's been playing safe 3rd pairing minutes for the most part but has stepped up pretty nicely since Ellis got injured.

Girgensons took huge strides in his sophomore year. He's on pace for over 20 goals while playing on a team with horrid offense. This especially is good seeing as he was originally projected to be a more defensive 3rd line center when he was drafted.

barkov has looked a lot better this year, even if it took him a lot of games to get going, he's improved in every facet and scores now
