So how do we fix our special teams?

Even if we do make the playoffs, we are not going to go anywhere unless we fix our special team play. Why is it so subpar anyway? Is it because of personnel? Scheme? Coaching?

Get Kopitar, Doughty and Brown off the powerplay.

After 15 years and numerous coaches one would think it would be obvious the coach isn't the problem.

EDIT: I guess I should clarify that I mean the coach telling them what to do out there isn't the problem. That the coach continues to put these three out there as PP1 is DEFINITELY a problem, if not THE problem.

Again I say fire Sturm and hire Tippet if i remember right he was the coach when we last had good special teams. Something major needs to change and it starts with the coaching.

Didn't he have Palffy Allison and Deadmarsh? I think it's more about the personnel.

I would argue that Bayfeild kailev turcotte durzi are as talented a group as that group was

I don't know if I would go that far. Palffy is a borderline HOF'er and even Kaliyev, who has the best shot of that group, hasn't demonstrated anything close to what Ziggy could do. Scoring 40+ in 3 straight seasons isn't easy, and he mostly played in the dead puck era. His shot was easily HOF level. I would poop money if Turcotte comes close to what Deadmarsh was. I think Allison is a solid equivalent to Byfield, just not stylistically.

your talking players that were developed vs starting out give the kids a chance to develop.

The PK scheme is oddly atrocioius, which is strange because that was previously a major strength.

The PP is a combination of personnel and scheme. But again, PP2 has it mostly figured out, so have to look at the common denominators over the last 15 years as mentioned.

I'd ditch the stupid PK passive with a high chaser that teams have been exploiting lately and use our better skaters to be more aggressive, and I'd make a mess out of PP1, it's no surprise it was far less stagnant when the personnel were rotating through (like Frk).

I blame Kompon. I mean it can't be the fault of the guy who's ass velcroed to the half-wall, or the guy who has the big wind up on his slap shot and fires it into the shin pads of opposition PK'ers.

2 shooters in our system known, above all else, for their aptitude at shooting one timers from their respective dots. 1 who holds the record for hardest shot in history

neither on the 1st unit, 1 in the A

obviously to coaching/management, the PP is not a priority

Drew Doughty has no business being on the PP. A fantastic player in other facets of the game but when it comes to the man advantage he is just not good. Everyone always mentions the denting of the shin guards, and yeah that is an unfortunate reality. But the worst part is he has terrible game sense about leaving the blue line and going below the circles for more dangerous opportunities. Watch other guys on other teams deployed similarly and how active and fluid they are on the PP and then watch Drew, it's night and day. And I have a hard time believing the coach is telling him not to go below the blue line, TM coached Brian Rafalski in Detroit and Dan Boyle in SJ and both guys were dynamic PP players playing the same spot Doughty does.

I think replacing Doughty with Durzi on the #1 PP unit would have an instant impact on the success of the unit.

I would love to see more success on the PP, but honestly, has anyone since maybe Voynov actually had a decent shot from the point?

Bring back Dominic Lavoie.

But seriously, I hope the team has been doing nothing but working on special teams during this break.

Modry use to be quite good at sensing the right time to move down to the top of the circle. Third goal in this sequence of playoff OT goals.

Aggregated PP/PK stats over time since Kopitar's first season:

Seasons 2006-07 to 2017-18 (without Sturm)
PP 13th overall
PK 11th overall

Seasons 2018/19 to Present (with Sturm)
PP 24th overall
PK 28th overall

There seems to be a strong correlation between the special teams falling off a cliff and Sturm arriving.

There's been plenty of times in the Kopitar/Doughty/Brown era that the special teams have been more than respectable.

The last 4 seasons have pretty much all been shit though.

It's the personnel. Kopitar is a great offensive player but he's been through countless coaching staffs and always defaults to feeding Doughty one-timers on the half wall. The limited success the Kings have had on the powerplay this season has mainly come from goals scored on the rush or by playing the game as if it were still 5 on 5. Gaining the zone and standing along the perimeter with a screen in front of the net may work once in a while but it's easy to defend.

Power Play? Mix up the personnel and use players who have some deception skills. Penalty Kill? Fire the coach in charge of it. There's no excuse with the personnel available they can't even be a middling PK team.
