It happened to a Leaf player not by a Leaf player. There is your difference.
You have been around long enough to know this.
Because Leafs players are under a different set of rules than the rest of the league.

Bunting has a reputation of being chippy and "involved". He draws a good number of penalties too. I guess they aren't giving him the respect of a star player and letting him take cross checks to the face. Not happy about it but I can see why there's no suspension.

Yeah, that's what gets me. Absolutely nothing. I can't think of a similar example where something like that happens and the entire hockey world just shrugs. I would say it was about 10 times more dangerous than what Tkachuk just got suspended for.

Other teams complain as well. But it feels like the Leafs get a bad deal more than others.

Bunting is a pest and draws a lot of attention, but he straight up gets abused out there. The guy is a bean pole, runs on pure emotion. Gets cross-checked in the face. Then he laughs back at the bench. That one should have been a game or two, doesn’t matter that he wasn’t bleeding or laying on the ice for 5 minutes.

Anaheim fans feel that the Ducks get a bad deal more than others.
Arizona fans feel that the Coyotes' get a bad deal more than others.
Boston fans feel that the Bruins get a bad deal more than others.
...
It's Dubas' fault for not drafting/trading for players who bleed more easily.
Buntings reputation as a player is entirely irrelevant. The leagues job is to determine guilt, not whether or not this was an act of universal karma.

The NHL knows that they can punish our Leafs without impunity. Same goes for the on-ice officiating. For every Leaf fan that gets pissed off with the anti-Leaf bias, there are hundreds more that will take over and buy tickets and merchandise no matter what.
There are also too may Leaf fans that are willing to buy tickets at every other NHL arena.
So, as long as MLSE is making money hand over fist, with little to no drop in merchandise and ticket sales, the League will continue to hand out fines and suspensions disproportionately to our Leafs.
Some of the other NHL teams can't afford to lose too many fans from their fan base, so the League is careful to not piss them off.
Ticket revenue is far more important to the two Florida teams, as it is with many other NHL teams, so I don't expect our Leafs to ever get a fair shake!!! It is just the way it is.

To be fair Bunting sort of dove into it and then embellished his reaction until the ref raised his arm, for which Bunts was waiting. But yeah, so did Dahling last year
And I assume you're saying each of those groups of fans can produce similar suspension/non-suspension examples?

Every fanbase makes the same claims, and they come up with equally opinionated versions of plays where they got a 'bad deal' from the league.
It happens in all sports: some fans will always find something to blame for a loss other than their team.
