I know a couple guys who smoke and play hockey, and one of them is really good. He's young enough at 19 to shake it off now, but I'm betting it'll catch up to him soon. Do you guys smoke and play? Please answer my poll...

im a non smoker but I play with some guys that smoke. Some of them are good and some are not.

I'm a non smoker that plays with a few smokers.... some of them are really good, and others are skilled but don't have the wind to be effective.

This is in the 18-22 age range.

Yeah. I don't smoke, and I've seen that too. I think it just comes down to just athletic ability. Some people seem to have trouble breathing late in games while others I've seen can go through 2 packs a week and not get winded after a game.

A bunch of guys on my two teams, I'll see them standing out in front smoking away just as I'm coming into change. They still play a heck of alot better than me, so who am I to say.

I know two guys who played pickup with us. One of them was an older goalie. Tattoos, beard, motorcycle, etc. He smoked through his mask while he played, he was pretty good.

Another guy was a skater and played with a cig in his mouth. He was good, but his stamina was horrible. He would get to the bench and cough up a lung, and sometimes puke. I havent seen much of him lately.

I smoked for 30 years before starting to play hockey. I have since quit and my play has gotten better, and stamina up. I'm not sure I would not have gotten better with time playing and power staking lessons anyway. I do know I feel better and I want to believe that I am receiving added benefit from quieting.

One of the ex-pros (Europe) I play with smokes like a chimney and lights up in the locker room right after playing. Even when I did smoke I couldn't even think of lighting up.

Quit if you do smoke, and don't start if you don't smoke kids
That CR4P will kill you!

smoking does nothing good at all. unless you want to die a little bit earlier

I'd say it's pretty much science that smoking will hinder your lung capacity/stamina

I know people who stopped playing hockey cause they just didn't have the drive to last out there while forcing themselves to cough their ass off

I don't smoke cigs but I smoke a ridiculous amount of weed, huge bongs before heading to the rink around noon lol.... been toking like a chimney for 5-6 years, visited amsterdam several times, blah blah blah stupid pothead lol

I was already somewhat athletic so I can keep up with the big boys but when I get to the bench, I'm head faced down and huffing lol... but none of this puking blood crap.... cigs will **** you more because you smoke a lot more, esp daily. and weed has also been known to be a lung chamber dilator of some sort.....

however, I'm in my early 20's.... my body can still take it... for now

:yo:

I smoked on and off for 15 years, but hockey helped me quit for good. Now I'm coming up on my one year smoke-free anniversary, and my game is improving.

Congratulations. I've known a couple older guys, in their 40s, quit even briefly and saw an improvement. You could tell within weeks.

I've seen a few guys that were smokers that played... Some of them were pretty good but none of them had any gas left in the tank after the 2nd period. As for the chew- I think that must be a regional thing as I've read about it on boards but never actually seen anyone at the rink with dip or chew.

Where I play, a couple of beers in the parking lot after the game is our vice of choice.
