Gee, I've been waiting all day for news from Shanny and Company and all I get is stone-cold silence.

Actually, an NHL spokesman has confirmed there will not be a hearing today on Weinie. Link here.

What do you think? The NHL is just going to blow this off? It looked to me like a very dangerous play that thankfully Doughty did not get hurt on (though initially he looked shaken up on the bench).

Which means we should amputate one of the Sedins next time the Kings play Vancouver

I saw that Player Safety brought their slew foot video back up to the top of the page. But when I re-watched it today it sure seems like the ones that would have gotten attention fit into what happened to Doughty last night.

I guess now the slew foot isn't considered a dangerous play anymore, and if a ref didn't call a penalty it didn't happen. :shakehead

Yeah, no clue why this isn't getting looked at, though I guess it plays right into the narrative of the NHL punishes outcomes, not plays.

Come on guys, I hate the Canucks as much as the next guy, and I hated seeing a scrub like Weise do that to a star player, but no way on Earth does that warrant supplemental discipline.

Would you have said that if Doughty's head hit the ice?

It didn't though.

I think it was a cheap shot, no question about it. But a large part of suspensions are based on the result of the play.

This is something that if it were to be dealt with, would have been dealt with on the ice.

Wrong.

The refs missed the play. Are you saying every play the ref misses, the player gets a pass? Your logic is not.

Cheap shots are reckless as are not being in control of your stick. Just like being in control of your stick at all times (for high sticking calls) and you said it yourself it was a cheap shot.

Unfortunately true, but it shouldn't be this way. The fact that the result was just hurt pride and tailbone doesn't negate a dangerous play, you know? Maybe it's just the player in me speaking but a slewfoot is one of the most chicken**** plays in hockey...you can't brace or defend yourself at all and you're attacking an opponent from behind. They usually cause no damage or major damage, not much in between. /rant

Edit: and this isn't even taking into account the skate blade off the ice. Most slew foots are just sliding your skate behind another players to trip.

Anyone who says that wasn't a slewfoot is either a massive homer or stupid. Usually goes together though.

Yep.

If Doughty was hurt, there'd have been something. But he wasn't, so let's bump a video and ignore the fan comments. :shakehead

I never understood the 'punish the outcomes' mentality.

some of the replies and descriptions make me laugh. most are along these lines

"it's not a slewfoot, because he didn't push back and kick his foot at the same time"

it was a slewfoot period. it's about knocking the guy off balance and then subsequently kicking his feet out from under him. it doesn't have to be timed perfectly. it's when ever you try kick a guys feet our from under him.

what is assinine about Shan-a-ban is they likely won't do anything about this. it will then be left to the Kings to decide if they want to exact payback the next they play VanCrapper. from there it may/may not escalate into something far worse

I think a phone call and a fine would have been appropriate.

Unfortunately, the NHL dispenses supplemental discipline based on the result and not the seriousness of the intent. Slew footing another player is a dangerous play.

It did end Patrick Swayze's hockey career.
