Not sure if this has been posted already but apparently from what i read Kent Hughes had a chat with Slaf and basically told him to start acting like a player that he just gave an 8 mil contract to.
In his latest paper for The Athletic, Arpon Basu spoke about Juraj Slafkovsky and revealed why the young Slovak was so pleased with his performance last night. It has to be said the power forward hasn't necessarily had it easy this season, he's been hurt, he's bounced around the lineup a bit and his production has dipped.

Yesterday, Slafkovsky didn't get on the scoresheet, but that's not the only way to have a positive impact on the game. In that dual with the New York Islanders he played big, He took that big frame of his and he put it to good use.

Landing six hits on one game, he was able to cause turnover and retrieve pucks for the Canadiens that he once upon a time wouldn't have been able to get. Speaking to Basu after the game last night, he confessed he received a swift talking to.

Surprisingly, it wasn't coach Martin St-Louis who did the talking on the team's day off on Monday, no, it was general manager Kent Hughes. The GM has a lot riding on Slafkovsky, afterall, he made him the first overall pick of the 2022 NHL draft, the first draft of the Hughes era and last off-season, he also gave him an eight-year contract with a $7.6 M cap hit which mean's he could be with Montreal until the end of the 2032-33 season.

The Slovak is a huge part of the Canadiens' rebuilt and it's not surprising that Hughes is keeping a close eye on his investment, especially considering he had already made it clear to Slafkovsky he needed him to take the next step at his exit meeting last season.

It's interesting that the youngster made the information public, he could have kept it to himself but he didn't, that's a great sign of accountability and honesty, two qualities which are very important in a player you wish to be part of your core.

I never understood why these kids get so much money for 1 year of success

Because you'll pay through the teeth a few years later when they breakout in their bridge contract. Example: Subban

It worked fine with Suzuki and Caufield. Next year will be the first of his new contract. By the time he's at year 3 or 4, 7,6mil will equate a very good second line player salary.

Unless there's planetary turmoil, the cap will keep going up and that 7.6 mil will equate a lesser percentage of the cap.

Did he take Slaf for a walk by the river at least?

True and the contract hasn't even kicked in yet I remember there were questions about Suzuki when he still had a year left.
Young Budding Star-Pedestal-Montreal...
yeah we've seen this movie before he needed a good talking to.

Who said he didn't ?

Newhook is working his a** off, it is embarrassing that he has become a whipping boy for the mob around here.

He obviously has lost some confidence and has made some poor plays but if he continues working hard it will eventually turn around.

How some people can't grasp this is beyond me.

Became many don’t even watch the game, and just repeat , oh newhook sucked , oh gally is crap , and Anderson a donkey .
Most are on these boards for a good conversation, but some are here so they feel good about themselves while knocking others , and how easy it is to knock the usually suspects , they will feel great when everyone else agrees

I'm pretty sure nobody but KH and Slaf know what they talked about if said meeting happened and you can be 100% sure none of the two told journalists what they talked about. So any "they talked about that" by a journalist is 100% pure speculation à la Kovalev meeting with Bob speculation. Never forget that journalists don't sell news anymore. Nobody is paying for news in 2024. Journalists sell adds. They are basically all "Allo police" material these days. I'm pretty sure KH talks to Slaf a couple of times a year.

"The donkey" always kills me

Lets give him a participation trophy. I swear it’s like rooting for a timbits team.

Not to derail the thread, but I still pay for news. Not a lot, probably around 40$/month between various subscriptions? It feels good to support good journalism and its worthwhile I think.

If you are getting delivered newspapers, then yeah $40/month isnt so bad.. but is that is for online content? Questionable, at best... i don't think even 1 journalist inside the entire Habs beat has anything more informative than what we can find on these boards...
Thats why I pay (here).. it's a way of giving back to the mods et al who keep these forums alive.

I may not agree with everything he has to say: but old man Chesternimitz writes some incredibly articulate and informative posts.. better than anything from Jack Todd/ Red Fischer, etc..

If i want to know "anything" NHL related this is the best place - ahead of nhl.com espn tsn etc...
