$6m is a lot but he's a 30-goal scorer so.

Presumably he wanted to live back in California as I'm sure he'd have got $5.5m from a playoff team.

This is the definition of cashing out. Toffoli signed a damn near unmovable contract on a team that’ll be in the basement for 3-4 years.
He will likely ride shotgun to Macklin Celebrini. They'll be able to move his contract in its expiry year.

Toffoli going from having short deals with great trade value to being able to buy a house in San Jose and never having to worry about moving

Great deal for toffoli

The Sharks are a top-pairing RHD away from being Cup favorites.

What's the plan exactly? Finish 4th last next season instead of dead last?
The goal is for the Sharks to start getting better competitively and a veteran to play with Celebrini will assist with that. A 4th last finish still gives them a solid draft pick next season and an opportunity potentially to draft another top end defenseman.

The plan here is to give a legitimate weapon for one of our young centers to play with so they don't have Luke Kunin and Barclay Goodrow on their wings

This doesn't move the needle in terms of end of season standings, but anything that makes Celebrini or Smith's lives easier is a good idea

As for the contract, it's totally fine, we're still below the salary floor after this signing, it only has 1 year that overlaps with the end of our young guy's ELCs, and by that time the cap will have risen by more than his entire cap hit, it's no bug deal to add a potential 30 goal scorer

Would you rather them not try to improve the team? The plan is clear, slowly improve while developing the young guys. If we finish last again...great that's another top-3 pick. If we can improve while guys like Celebrini/Smith/etc. get accustomed that's even better.

We have two U20 centres coming in...this is a legit winger to play with one of them.

The plan is to give Celebrini some real NHL players to play with, be competitive, and not be an embarrassment to the NHL.

Do you seriously think Tyler Toffoli is worth 20 points in the standings? The Sharks are still gonna be a bottom-2 team in the league, but ‘normal’ bad instead of ‘literal abomination and disgrace to the sport of hockey’.

This is exactly the sort of deal the Sharks should be making. Term won’t be a problem as our top winger prospects like Musty, Chernyshov, and Halttunen will still be on ELCs when Toffoli expires.

Seems pretty simple to me why Sharks signed him.

They need to hit the cap floor.
They got legit top-6 winger to play with the youngsters.
Improve the team.

Playing only over the hill cap dumps with rookies and sophomore's doesn't build a future winning team IRL.

Hawks signed Hall last year after drafting Bedard.

This is basically that for the Sharks.

That said.. only reason Toffoli would sign with them is money. When that's the mentality and the player is aging, you're probably not getting the best of them.

But eh, you need people to play in the top 6.
