I didn't see any significant NHL qualities in his time in Ottawa. Seems like a classic lower league high scorer who doesn't exist on NHL ice. Hope he turns things around.

Good signing for the Sharks.

Was one of the top NCAA UFAs in 2018/19 and looked good in his initial stint in Ottawa, but had a dreadful follow-up season.

He's always been a playmaker so seeing him with 46 goals in his last 76 SHL games is surprising.

I understand this is a very minor signing, absolutely no risk involved, but I still have to ask

Why?
Worst case scenario is that he adds veteran experience to their AHL team that is going to have a large influx of young players to it. They can't allow themselves to be a completely trash team again next year with all those kids. They're looking at a minimum of five pro rookies going to the Barracuda up front. Six if they want to slide Eklund another season. Seven if they decide to sign Linus Oberg. Raska will be a 21 year old 2nd year player there. Hamaliuk will be a 22 year old 2nd year player there and Ibragimov will also be a 2nd year guy with limited AHL experience because he just wasn't very good. It's a lot of youth and not so good when they need to be competitive.

It can't hurt to have a vet with a wealth of experiences between his collegiate time, his time overseas in Sweden, being a sought after UDFA and dealing with some of the expectations of that. He's got to have a lot of wisdom over a relatively short career.

Unsexy part about being GM is stocking your AHL roster. After trading away picks, San Jose only had 10 selections between 2018-2019 so there's a little bit of a gap there and Veronneau wouldn't necessarily be blocking anybody. They'll get an influx of forwards from 2020 (Bordeleau/Wiesblatt/Robins) who'll be first year pros next season.

NHL RWs: Barabanov (LW), Labanc, Balcers (LW)
AHL RWs: Veronneau, Wiesblatt, Blichfeld, Coe, Raska

As others mentioned, San Jose's AHL team has the worst record in the league. So Veronneau could provide some "veteran" help there. Best case for Veronneau, he has a shot at winning an NHL spot.

This is the one thing I really appreciate about the sharks management right now. Despite the questionable decision to tighten the blindfold and yell "plofffs boys we in the ploffffs", I like that they actively recruit folks from Europe like this. Even Suomela got us Baravanov somehow

He was a legit second liner on COL who is way better than us. He’s a good middle 6 winger even if he doesn’t fit your size requirements.
Size has nothing to do with it
