Because New Jersey is rumored to be offering the 10th overall. Unless Buffalo adds a worthwhile piece to the 14th, the higher draft choice is usually the better trade return.

I had the exact opposite feeling of it. I figured they thought that 11 was too much and this was a way to lessen the blow of trading 11 as they’d get 42 in return.

San Jose's pick didn't look attractive enough, Buff didn't want those players, so they did that trade. SJS needs NHL players badly.
