Defenseman prospect Derek Forbort was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the first round of the 2010 National Hockey League Entry Draft, a deep draft in which the vast majority of first round picks are now playing in the NHL.

So why hasn't Forbort been able to make the jump for good? What's holding him back? What are his chances for this season?

Frozen Royalty spoke exclusively with Forbort and Kings Vice President of Hockey Operations Michael Futa about that.

The Future Begins Now

Nice read, thank you.

In my opinion Forbert, as well as Gravel, Dowd and Mersch, have earned the opportunity to prove themselves at the NHL level. These guys exemplify the 'Kings philosophy' of developing players and maintaining a competitive, playoff worthy and hopefully eventually a Stanley Cup contending team.

“He was an excellent skater, coming out of a very low level of hockey before he went to the University of North Dakota,†added Futa.

First time I've ever heard the NTDP considered a low level of hockey by anyone.
