Should we upgrade at this deadline and where?

I'm all for keeping this roster as is. Zero interest in spending assets for a rental, obviously. I'd also be cool with seeing what Yzerman could get for Tarasenko and/or Gustafsson.

This team isn't one move away from a deep playoff run as of today. I guess my main issue is that I don't want to watch Holl and Gustafsson play defense on this team anymore.

Does Jones make sense? Is he any good? Honestly dont watch hawks enough to know. But sounds like he is a solid all around defender and might b fit for 2nd pair behind seider.

IMO not worried about him blocking ASP. ASP might need to cook a year in AHL then nothing wrong for playing 3rd pair D n PP time for 1st couple years. BY end of Jones contract could b used as a super solid 3rd pair guy who PKs.

What would cost be? I imagine:

Jones (1 mil retained) for a B level prospect (but who? tuomisto? wallinder? viro?), a 2nd perhaps or a 1st?

EDIT: Is he a diva? We know SY aint fond of no divas.

Jones is a RHD, which means he isn’t a first pair for us (Seider) and shouldn’t be a second pair for us (Edvinsson/Johansson). He makes way too much to be on the third pairing.

I think it's the same as it's been. Upgrade at the deadline if there's a move that makes sense to improve the team long term. I don't see giving up assets for a rental unless it's something negligible. Late pick for a plug.

I think Yzerman likes also short-term deals. Don't think we'll get a UFA rental, but some guys who have 2-3 contract years left, like Scott Laughton. And still in good age, Laughton is 30, 2-years left.

Laughton could help now, could be a placeholder also for next season, and buys some time for Danielson to develop. Laughton can also play wing, so if you promote another Center up, he goes to wing and can mentor the kid.

It's just so many possibilities for the coach with that kind of guy.

Aljo or chiarot could play with seider on top pair or soldiify bottom pair.

Yes to a degree, if he is re-signed. Now I don't think he should be traded from their perspective, but if it were to happen I would try to be on it. Detroit can give some kind of a haul, but not the whole future reserves.

If we are getting a top 4 dman want a defensively responsible guy for Seider who can hopefully make an ok breakout pass. Ed/Aljo have done well as a 2nd pair. I don't want to assume that Aljo will look good with someone else just to get Ed a better partner. Chiarot is who we need to upgrade.

I'm fine with a 4th line center or 3rd pairing d rental as long as we are talking lower round picks. Someone who is a 3rd round and below guy is probably 3-4 years away from even sniffing an NHL roster spot, and that is a best case scenario. 1st & 2nd round picks should only be used on top 6, top 4 guys that will at least be sticking around a bit.
