Any idea why he refuses to do that here?

idk but those other players (latvian?) look small-ish. they don't look like NHLers. Willy looks like a beast compared to them.

but hopefully he brings that physicality to the NHL next season.

And hope not to run into a freaking dynasty in the first round!

You put Toronto against Florida, or most of the east and the almost the entire Western conference (sans Colorado) and we likely roll through.

and yet they couldn't beat the worst team to make the playoffs ever, the habs. so idk. it's like they play to the level of their competition (but just a hair less to ensure a game 7 loss).

Last year was a choke job.
But I'd wager leafs of this year take out habs of last year. In a 7 game series.

Yep, down a goal in the final minutes of game 7 is no time for grinderminded puck battles. Stupid fans.
Not instead of Nylander. And in the final minuters of game 7 its a great time for the three 11mills to give something back for that paycheck.

Maby Keefe could have put all the money on a line.

Ive never seen a shift like that from Nylander in the NHL...Playing for his country, he cares more, tries harder he won the mvp a few years ago with that same jersey on. That Nylander is 100 point man all day long, Im stunned thats him and imagine the slap his team mates might feel from him. Id trade him.

Let us not forget that that "worst team to make the playoffs ever" went on to make the Finals knocking out powerhouse Vegas to do so. The Leafs absolutely deserve blame for not closing them out after going up 3-1, but you also have to credit that Habs team (well, more Price for playing like an MVP that post-season).

Though his playoff ppg over the past three playoffs is higher rate than his regular season production. Think he may be the only Leaf who manages to be more productive during the post season (though may be wrong)
I was obviously referring to the video of him hitting everything in sight.

Exactly.
Why won’t he deliver that for the fans and team that pay him millions a year?
I’m surprised more aren’t annoyed by that video.

Trade Willy for a top prospect RD and prospect center. Move JT to RW, with that prospect at center. Use additional cap to keep campbell & acquire a 2nd line LW.

Bunting Matthews Marner
LW <ProspectCenter> JT
LW Kämpf Kase

Rielly <Prospect RD>
Muzzin Brodie
Giordano Lilly
Sandin Lyubushkin

Trade Holl & Kerfoot

Are you sure that we could get two players who could immediately step in as 2C and top pairing D, plus have enough money left over for a 2W or 3W plus money left over for a raise for Campbell?

I think you would also have to find a GM who's just had a lobotomy to trade with.

You look like you have a lot of free time on your hands for stuff, you aren't getting paid for.

And for good reasons.

I couldn't read past the first trade. A non vaxxed guy coming to Doug Ford's Ontario. NOT going to happen.

Ford owns the company that drew the lame covid signals and patterns as to where you could walk and go in stores.

You think Bertuzzi wants to come to that neck of the woods?

Sorry, looks like you spent a massive amount of time on something silly. Maybe go cut the lawn and do some weeding instead.

I have a theory.

There was a different tone in the exit meetings. Dubas and co. weren't acting like the nice guys they usually are. They called out some of those weak plays we all saw against Tampa. Nylander is getting a feeling that he may be on the chopping block. So, in a last ditch effort to stay with the team, he is playing super-aggressive at the worlds. Showing management that he has it in him to play that way.

Just a theory.

I wonder if him playing centre, and allowed to play his style of game with players who fit with that style, rather than being forced to play wing with with a centre who may be the worst possible fit, has anything to do with that?

It’d be nice if that was the case but he’s done this before. I think it has more to do with his desire to win a IIHF medal, and the fact the competition is smaller and weaker.

Perhaps the Leafs aren't all that close and he feels appreciated on his National Team?
We know how it goes in Toronto, and so does he.

Sandwiching some good posts here. Yes, he is beefed right up from training hard and playing in the NHl. And yeah, he is not going up against NHL brawn, so he probably does feel a bit braver.

Yeah, he is definitely a third or fourth wheel on the Leafs and likes being more important.

But yeah again, as a Leaf fan, and a guy who loves players that go flat out, I am offended watching him play like the Tasmanian devil in that video clip, and NEVER seeing that once, in a Leaf jersey.

That truly bothers me.

Anyone have a clip of Nylander covering his point man (I think game 7) ? It looked to me that he held his legs together before the shot looking like a blocking attempt but he purposely drifted out of the defenceman's shooting lane and I thought it looked like he was just pretending to block the shot. I could be wrong and maybe he did it so the goalie could see the shot coming but I'd like to see the clip again to verify.

Same. But perhaps if that bitter defeat is going to propel Nylander forward in his development that's a good thing to see. Wonder why Matthews and Marner didn't represent their countries?

I don't think Nylander will ever be that in Toronto, and it really wouldn't matter if he was.

Looks like Nylander likes hockey more than golf.

The time to trade Willy is next offseason.
Willy's contract is good and will be better after one more productive season.
We can afford his contract today. We will not be able to afford his next contract.

Can't see us getting a 35 goal scorer for less than $7 mill so keep him on a contract that he will out produce and trade him next off season.

Plus can you imagine Willie playing on a contract year?!
Perfect player to have on a deep playoffs run ;-)

Best/Least risky way to improve by moving 88 is to trade him for elite talent on ELC(s) and a pick and signing a UFA who brings you what we lack and can score 30 goals playing with Tavares.

The second line of Bunting - Tavares - Mikheyev isn't going to be good enough. Mikheyev's offense basically disappears in the playoffs, he has 1 5v5 point in 19 playoff games, a secondary assist. Tavares is most likely going to take another step back.

If we trade Nylander, we need it to be for a slightly less talented player on an ELC, then using his cap space to fill out the rest of the roster.
