Should this really be called a "rebuild"?

I was thinking about this today, and can this really be called a rebuild? Doesn't that imply that there was something there previously? I mean, when was the last time the Habs were contenders, let alone favorites? (Please don't bring up the Stanley cup run 2 years ago, they were neither). How often have they even won their conference in the last 20 years? Even going back to 1993, they weren't considered contenders.
I think this is more of "building" rather than "rebuilding".

No offense… but who cares?

All that’s a certainty is this team will not be stripped to its foundations followed by years to drafting top-5.

It’ll be a carbon copy strategy of Gorton’s NYR “reconstruction”, whether he’s can be successfully here with such a strategy is TBD

This is still in the demolition phase until the TDL this year , until you get rid of the rotting structure you are not doing either building or rebuilding. The foundation can't be built on without the ability both in cap space and playing time for the youth before then. Depending on what remains by next summer we can determine how far away the team is from getting back to competing.

Habs were good team. There was a lot of pieces here. Suzuki, Caufield, Guhle. Plus Bergevin left a lot of tradable pieces ie, Toffoli, Anderson, Chiarot, Lekhonen, Edmundton, Dvorak. A rebuild is what Black Hawks/Sharks are doing. I think we will turn the corner at Draft'23 and free agency next year. Be exciting time

We're more in the building stage right now.

2019: 3rd overall + 15th overall (Dach, Caufield)
2020: 16th overall + 25th overall (Guhle, Barron)
2021: 31st overall (Mailloux)
2022: 1st overall + 26th overall (Slafkovsky, Mesar)

We have 7 players drafted in the 1st round in the last 4 years, including a 1st overall and 3rd overall.
We will most likely add another top 10 pick and bottom 10 pick next year to that list.

That should be enough to complete the rebuild in terms of prospects if we develop them properly.

No one cares
It's more of a salvage operation than a rebuild. Bergevin f***ed things up so bad that Molson had to hire two guys to clean it all up. We finish bottom 5 this year, dump a few contracts via trade and free agents leaving and we spend and add veteran talent to the young core and take a shot at the playoffs in 23-24.

So... I want my last few minutes of life back because that was a whole big waste of time. It isn't called a "rebuild" because of the fragile ego of Montreal fans and media... only it is. And when was the last time blah blah blah, there's twenty-four cups blocking my ears! I can't hear the rest.

And... cut. Thread's over. Shut this shit down.

More of a realization that we operate in a capped expanding profit sharing league.
