I think the discussion at this point needs to be brought up. The number of idiotic contracts he is giving out is mind boggling. His Shattenkirk signing was beyond stupid. He went out of his way to trade for defenseman prospects or sign them like Pionk, DeAngelo, Hajek, Rykov and Lindgren. He obviously was completely incompetent with his strategic plan. If that was his goal, he should have never signed Shattenkirk. Or signed Smith for that point who is an awful hockey player. Then, he rushes on Skjei and hands him a huge contract when there was ZERO need for it. He should have signed him to a bridge deal.

Then, the clown continues not to learn his lesson and gives Skjei a modified NTC on the back end of his contract. Why this fool doesn't have a no NMC or NTC policy is mind boggling. Players talk about what a first class organization the Rangers are. So, if you want to play here, then you don't get a NMC or NTC. If you don't like it, request a trade and we'll show you the door.

His draft picks have been more and more shaky. The team is void of wingers and he uses 3 out of his first 4 picks last year on 2 defenseman and a goalie. Granted, the d-men look fantastic but again, if he was going to trade for and draft all of these defenseman, why the heck is he signing Shattenkirk, Smith and Skjei to huge, long term deals. He obviously has no long term plan or vision as to what the heck he is doing.

He drafts a kid in Andersson 7th overall, then trades Spooner for Strome instead of getting a pick and takes up another roster spot blocking the kid from getting more ice time. At this point, I have no issue if they fire this guy. I don't think he has a clue what he's doing. Seems like he's escaped criticism up to this point which he really shouldn't. He's made a ton of mistakes and somehow has avoided being called out on them. Not sure who would be a good replacement. Haven't thought about that yet. However, if you look at his body of work since he's been the GM, I don't think it can be argued that it's a huge disappointment.

Shattenkirk and Smith came along before the organisation decided to rebuild. Circumstances change. He gets a pass there for me.

Skjei maybe got a bit too much, but at least they are looking to the future with him. He is getting paid for what he (hopefully) can do in the future, not what he's done in the past like Girardi, Staal etc were.

I'm not sure what you expected Spooner to fetch in terms of picks. He absolutely sucked this year, flushing his value down the toilet. Maybe Strome was the best they could get. He's certainly playing better than Spooner did for the Rangers this year. I'm guessing they don't see Strome as long term competition for Andersson, but their usage of him (Andersson) this year is a bit aggravating - either give him minutes or send him down.

Picking Lindblom last year seems strange. I'll give you that one.

Since the rebuild started in earnest, Gorton has shipped out expiring contracts and got some nice assets in return. I'd say at the very worst, he's doing what is expected of him. I'd be very surprised if he is even remotely close to being fired. He's fine in my opinion.

We got a look Sunday at our defense without Smith and Shattenkirk. Fun times.

We're tanking as hard as we can. We can't just play our AHL team. We need warm bodies on the blueline.

Smith and Shattenkirk will be expired by the time our prospects are ready. You make it sound like they're signed through 2040.

Less than most teams, nothing awful.

His Shattenkirk signing was beyond stupid.

It was a no-brainer. Eventually the Rangers will get a first round pick and a prospect for Shatty and for now he's quality vet leadership.

He went out of his way to trade for defenseman prospects or sign them like Pionk, DeAngelo, Hajek, Rykov and Lindgren.

That is good news.

He obviously was completely incompetent with his strategic plan. If that was his goal, he should have never signed Shattenkirk.

There was never any proof that ADA and/or Pionk will step into the top-4. Nor do we have a problem right now with too many RHD. The others (Hajek, Rykov, Lindgren) are LHD and likely won't be ready for f/t NHL duty before Shatty leaves.

Or signed Smith for that point who is an awful hockey player.

It made sense at the time. Nor is it a crippling contract, just not a great one. A team can easily tolerate one contract like that.

Then, he rushes on Skjei and hands him a huge contract when there was ZERO need for it.

Skjei was obviously ready.

He should have signed him to a bridge deal.

No, a bridge is given to save money short-term, knowing you'll pay more long-term most of the time. When a team is going to be bad short-term, a bridge doesn't make sense.

Then, the clown continues not to learn his lesson and gives Skjei a modified NTC on the back end of his contract. Why this fool doesn't have a no NMC or NTC policy is mind boggling.

It was done to reduce the cap hit and incentivize a long-term contract.

His draft picks have been more and more shaky.

They looked pretty strong to me.

The team is void of wingers and he uses 3 out of his first 4 picks last year on 2 defenseman and a goalie.

The team needed defensemen more.

Granted, the d-men look fantastic

You draft BPA.

but again, if he was going to trade for and draft all of these defenseman, why the heck is he signing Shattenkirk, Smith and Skjei to huge, long term deals. He obviously has no long term plan or vision as to what the heck he is doing.

Shatty has nothing to do with it, he won't be here when K'Andre and Lundkvist are fully baked.

He drafts a kid in Andersson 7th overall

You need quality in the middle-6 and when a team just starts the rebuild process, beginning with a safe pick makes sense.

then trades Spooner for Strome instead of getting a pick and takes up another roster spot blocking the kid from getting more ice time.

No kid is ready unless it's sheltered minutes for a few games. Strome is worth more than whatever pick Spooner was going to bring back. He can be traded for more. He's worth more. You upgrade the value every time.

At this point, I have no issue if they fire this guy.

You're wrong.

I don't think he has a clue what he's doing.

You're wrong.

Should the Rangers stick with Gorton? Here's why:

- Reaching for Chytil
- Drafting Kravtsov
- Trading up for K'Andre Miller
- Trading Brassard for Zibanejad
- Signing Vesey
- Signing Pionk
- Moving on from AV
- Trading McDonagh and Miller for a package that includes Namestnikov, Howden, Hajek and picks

There's this notion with some people that a GM has to be flawless to keep his job. It's BS.

He's going to get this year plus the next two and it will be reassessed.

If the Rangers are in the same position now in two seasons, it'll probably be a total house cleaning.

I don't see them being this bad once the next wave and a new core is brought in and that includes trades and UFAs.

This whole notion that every pick is going to be a superstar or major contributor is not realistic. If Hajek becomes what Claesson is, and Anderson is in fact Lucien Deblois, but Virta comes in is dynamite and Rannanen pans out, is it ideal? I can't say but every franchise has things like that happen.

Ah, back to "should have bridged the guy that underperformed, but he shouldn't have bridged the guy that improved" critique.

There was a time here when the biggest complaint was that this organization bridged players.

With hindsight, everyone is a HOF general manager. It's ridiculous how we always criticize the bad things, but never praise the good things.

pls. stop with quote tunnels and go in pms - or just accept that maybe another person have a different opinion in life or see things differently.
It`s too early in my view concerning Gorton, but it has been a bumpy road with the contract topic recently, but in his defense it`s hard to guess that a person like Smith turned out last year not proper fit or not ready for a hockey season. And it`s really hard to figure out player development also concerning draft picks. It was also a risk moving Ryan Mc. for future, but in that process taking risks is necessary to achieve the goal to get younger and build a new core of players after the cup final in 2014.

Anyway about draft picks - you only hear about Elias from Nucks almost in the 2017 draft in the media recently since he has a successful season so far, because player development take years.

So much for NY not having the patience for a rebuild...:shakehead

I would like to see this board make it so you can't quote more than like 3 times in a post. Nobody cares if you're right when you do this. They just scroll past this like it was Ted Cruz reading Green eggs and ham. Not targeting anyone in particular, but it's awful.

A GM can't go all in on a plan. They need to have a backup plan. Sometimes it may seem the plans contradict each other. I dont know how you say no to Shattenkirk, who was the top UFA dman thatvyear and willing to come to you for less than market value. That would have been a bad move and we would be second guessing that.

At this point, what good things has he done? Looks like he might have hit on the Chytil pick. Drafting a player at 7th overall should be close to a sure thing. I'm all for building from the goal, to defense out. However, you can't be so dumb like Gorton was that you didn't know you were going to do this 2-3 years ago with the decline of Girardi, Staal and the rest of the defense. Which brings us the point again that I made earlier. If your GM had a clue which he should that he was going to do this a couple of years back, why the heck did he sign Smith and Shattenkirk? Or commit such a big contract to a second year player coming off a horrible season?

Yes, the Nash trade was a great move. I even liked the McDonagh deal. However, a good portion of those deals are negated by his stupidity of signing Shattenkirk, Smith and Skjei. He's created a log jam on defense. If you are going to add two defenseman like Lindgren and Hajek to your system, don't block them by signing guys to 4 to 6 year deals. It is pretty obvious that he lacks vision and the ability to put together a long term plan.

There were plenty of stop gap guys out there he could have signed for 2 years on defense. The more I watch Gorton, the more I think a big part of his delusional plan is to sign vets and then trade them for picks at some point. Well, that only works if their contracts don't stink and they are playing fairly well. Smith and Shattenkirk both have awful contracts and they aren't playing well. Skjei is 24 but he's now played like garbage for 1 year and a half. He might get lucky and trade Staal because he's playing better. It's looking more and more like this team is going to have to buyout Smith.

As far as saying no to Shattenkirk. Did you hear the media and Caps fans on his performance when he got dealt there? The team basically came out and said he wasn't close to the first pairing defenseman they thought they were getting. Plus, his defense was always a negative in St. Louis. You pass on him if your GM knew he was going to trade players off for defenseman prospects and start the rebuild. Which is what your GM should have known.

Way too much instant gratification. I was even on Twitter where Hajek was being "tried for his lack of offense" by an angry mob.

People want Hajek and Lindgren to come up this season? They might, we don't know what this team looks like in two days but more likely two months.

There were no DMen not named Pionk and Deangelo who were ready to contribute opening night.

The truth is, Gorton and Quinn have this year and next as a pass. By 2020-21 expectations will start to increase.

Not until its seen how this past draft's players and this upcoming draft picks fare. If they all flop then there's a case, but in the mean time, this thread is silly and way too premature.

I've said this before.

Go back to Lias draft year and tell me, besides Chytil, who was picked after Lias that you feel is a slam dunk star we missed on?

There isn't. Mittlestad and Tolvanen both have huge question marks and less "staying power" if their offence doesn't materialize. Andersson has the tools to at least be a career NHL'er.

I'm not mad at all with that pick. It's looking to be a weak draft outside the top 6 in general in retrospect.

Necas is a guy I was interested in, but not at 7. Brannstrom the same. Both were gone by the time we picked at 21. There was no clear cut favorite for me at 7 in that draft, unlike the 2018 draft where I was screaming for Kravtsov.
