Should David Quinn be fired?

As a father figure and human he's helped nurture a lot of these young kids into young adults which is where his primary strength is and why a change will not happen now. As a hockey coach, very mediocre. Can't adjust in games, was extremely unprepared for the playins, and a lot of the laissez-faire vibe and "this team needs a Cup of Joe to wake up" from the AV days is still there.

Essentially he's a dialed down Bostonian version of AV who brings out the tough love every now and then.

Combine this with firing him after two years is not a good way to do business and not part of NHL 21st century etiquette unless you have a situation like with Peters or Montgomery, he gets one more year.

It's a big year for him. These kids have to continue to develop. Kaako has to hit at least 18G, Chytil be a little more assertive, Hajek consistent, Howden noticeable, Lemiuex smarter, etc.

If they miss the playoffs or go out on a whimper, it's time for a change. if they start out sluggish, Knoblauch is a call a way.

Well the goal is to be good enough to win a Cup. You can’t build a team that is guaranteed to win one.
Those teams weren't good enough to win a cup. Then when we did get there, LA beat the shit out of us in 5. Don't care about all the overtime games or anything else, we lost in 5. Then next season, we lost in game 7 at home in the ECF because the team couldn't score a goal at home. Next season, lost to Pittsburgh. Then Ottawa.
Team wasn't good enough at all. Hopefully we build a team that doesn't need the goalie to turn into Jesus himself to win games.

One team missed the Presidents’ Trophy by like 1 point
One team made the SCF the year before winning the Presidents’ Trophy
One team won the Presidents’ Trophy

And none of those teams won the cup. Not sure why you're trying to start an argument about this. If you're happy with never winning anything meaningful, good for you.

Me writing down the list of posters in support of firing Quinn so I know who I can count on to agree with me in the off season threads.

If we're going to fire someone, let's make it the individual at MSG responsible for allowing the same car commercials (with the same irritating music) to be aired 300 to 400 times each broadcast season... Thank you...

Too early to fire Quinn. However, the team needs to make significant growth next year defensively or then he might be in trouble. There is an excellent coach in Hartford waiting for a chance. Especially with his ability to get players to play well defensively.

Not only that, They should hire friends and family of Isiah Thomas to harass David Quinn into leaving.....worked before but pay later

No but I think there needs to be change. I don't think you can have two guys out of college hockey learn the NHL, and have another guy who was never really a coach in recent years run your bench, and saw a rather poor stretch of talent development during what we can assume are the years Nathan McKinnon wasn't enjoying hockey.

Here's what I will say about Quinn.
  • He's got great intentions
  • Does a really good job of conveying the message
  • He had guys playing the right way
  • You saw some wins with a consistent identity which really turned my thoughts on Quinn individually around.
  • I like him as a culture builder.
  • I like him as an interview, I think he is great at that.
  • I like him holding guys accountable.
He's earned my respect by being honest, and I think we are seeing the hockey savvy of a JD lead media team run the Rangers as well. Thought Quinn and the media team did an outstanding job this year as the year moved along. That said, Quinn isn't the X's & O's guy and that's been very clear for a while, but that's okay. That's not a problem if he does the above well and guys play for him and each other. But to help all of that out, I think you need another guy like a Lindy Ruff, who can bench manage in the NHL.

I also think you need a player developer, and I think you need a really really smart X's & O's guy who can take over match-ups when needed. All in all, it's really about upgrading on Greg Brown and David Oliver and giving Quinn one more year. The first two years had a lot of learning experiences for the coaching staff. You had a couple of guys in key positions trying to learn the league for the first time in a coaching capacity or in a while.

Sorry but I think most here are absolutely nutz in regards to DQ.
Just because the team is young, "the coach also deserves time to learn? "
He's inherited players from other organizations yet "he deserves credit for developing them?"
He's bottom of the league when it comes to DEFENSE.
He's not X and O's nor does he ever counter any other opposing coaches strategy.
He himself has no f***ing strategy!
His ice time and usage of players are questionable at best.
I could go on and on.
Is this some kind of joke?
What am I missing here?

What did you expect him to do with this roster? The bottom 6 and defense will suck until we get actual NHL players on both sides. No coach will make that better

I expect a coach to work with the players he has and to use them in a way they will succeed.
I also expect him to take an in- game approach that counters whatevers going on in front of him, whether that be "DEFENSE", offense or both.
He's done neither all while thinking he's going to fool anyone of the veteran coaches in this league.
It's laughable how this guy has an NHL job.

The guys who were supposed to produce did. This is just classic NYR fans having no patience and wanting the sexy name at head coach.

You got it all wrong but I do expect results at the NHL level.
JG can't even assemble a component 4th line for as long as he's been here.
He's got 3/4 roster full of tweens all while up against the cap.
No more free passes from me..

How am i wrong? The bottom 6 has nobody and half the defense sucks or is young.

i agree about JG but a coach can't turn shit into gold.

You're wrong in the sense that I have no patience.
I've been a diehard for more years than I care to admit.
Any team that has Smith on the top pairing is a f***ing joke.

DQ refuses to run anything other than a pond hockey system.
It's Bush league and may work in college but it isn't going to work here.

Oh ok, i gotcha.
Yeah, it is a joke and stuff like that needs to be fixed before we do anything. I would hope the team realizes it.

This is such an obnoxious attitude. If you believe the Stanley Cup is the only thing that matters, don't say the team hasn't won 'anything meaningful'. just say they haven't won the Cup. The team won stuff, like the Presidents Trophy and the Eastern Conference champ. Couple of division champs. If those don't matter to you, fine. Just say the team didn't win the cup and thats all that matters.

But all the picks and prospects we gave up and we have nothing to show for it. It's not obnoxious, it's the truth. That team will be remembered as a good team that couldn't win the cup. Not sure why anybody should be happy about that.

No one's thrilled about that but it shouldn't be looked at as a waste, or the equivalent of being a basement dweller for those 10 years. Its so hard to win the cup, that's why so many teams have such long droughts. You need a lot of luck. Which is something we really, really lacked during those runs.

Against LA, we had leads a few times, the team kept shitting the bed and they couldn't do anything else. That's not luck, that's being not good enough. I never said they were a basement dweller or a waste but we made a lot of win now moves and they didn't really work out. Maybe next time they will when the time comes.

I agree the cup is hard to win, probably the hardest championship to win in all of sports.

Hes certainly a good ol NA boy and its shown. A reflection of the good ol boys club in management. Not a fan, and that known snake Gord Murphy can kick rocks too.
