Should the NHL take a note from the NFL (and change the timing of the All-Star Game)?

I've always thought the fact that the NFL Pro Bowl being at the end of the season was far better than being in the middle. My question to you fellow HFers is, should the NHL change the all-star game to after the Stanley Cup playoffs and before the draft?

Pros
- You get players who are there because of the entirety of their regular season and/or playoffs play.
- Teams might be more willing to lend their players during this time as there are no games left in the season or playoffs.
- It keeps fans interested right up until the draft and could even be extended to include other events.
- It gets rid of that pesky all-star break that can sometimes make or break streaks and would shorten the season a little bit.
- During Olympic years, there can still be a break for Olympics (provided the players are still going) but there can also still be an all-star game.

Cons
- Lets hear them.

No all star break for players

No player is going to want to come back from their summer break/training for a weekend of all star crap

Those 2 will probably be enough.

You'd get a lot more players dropping out if the game was after the playoffs, than in midseason. Think of all the players who play through the post-season with injuries.

I don't really see any advantage to having the all-star game after the season.

1. The Pro Bowl is the biggest joke in professional sports, yes, more so than the Oilers, no one should try to mimic any part of that.

2. The NHLPA wouldn't accept losing the mid-season vacation.

I think this could easily go the other way for some players. I'm sure there are many who would rather keep playing, especially if they're on a hot streak.

Maybe some of the younger guys but that 3-4 days off is huge for resting small and nagging injuries. It's also good to just take a step back from the game for a bit.

haha yeah because the NHL all star break is taken very seriously by the players. It's obviously in good fun. Doesn't matter when it is, no one is going to try.

the pros of the NFL is that each penalty is reviewed over video. They need to do that stuff in the NHL, there too many embellishing going on, and if they actually review it, it's easier to catch the divers and even reverse the call to call the penalty on the diving party.

Maybe it's just me but I want to see players in an all-star game because of what they have done for the entire season, not half. We could even still have the four days off. But just move the all-star festivities to the end. Maybe Crosby would participate.

Well of course this should have been implemented years ago.

That... It's a long Season and the ALL-Star weekend gives the players a bit of a break. Besides, unlike the NFL Playoffs, the NHL Playoffs takes about 2 months. Players who didn't make the Playoffs have gone off to do other things; and the ones who played in that long Playoff stretch just want to finally go and rest, and not play yet another game.

New idea, we have it at the beginning of the season! Makes the same amount of sense. The fan vote will most likely be the same players anyways.

This and it gives guys more time to spend with their families. Especially for the guys like B Richards for instance, he probably didn't move his family to Chicago cause he's on a one year deal so he'd get a nice couple days to spend with them.

With football, it's only a 4 week break between the season ending and the pro bowl (it's in between the conference championship and SB). In hockey, it wouldn't fit between the Conference and Stanley Cup Finals... so if you put it at the very end of the season you're talking about 2 months. Plus Pro Bowl is in Hawaii, I'm sure more players would take the trip to Hawaii than going to *Random NHL City*.

Why not just have it during preseason and get it over with? Bring in the players who were MVP's of their teams from the previous season.

The stars or at least our stars (for the Canucks) only play maybe two preseason games every year.

It'd bring in more viewers imo usually a week or two once the NHL playoffs are done I'm dying for anything hockey this would bring back some excitement.

Or just leave it as is? Since there's nothing wrong with how it is now?

Having it at the end of the season might be the worst possible idea, simply because there will be a multitude of players that will refuse to show. Either because they're already two months into their offseason vacation/training (for those that miss the playoffs) or because they just finished a grueling playoff series and are likely banged up.
