Lots of teams have to expose good forwards. The leafs do not.
In fact, the leafs have three empty forward slots.

Forwards:
Just the big four

defence:
Reilly
Brodie
Muzzin

No reason to protect holl or dermott.

Should the leafs make a move for a vulnerable forward now? Hope we are exploring it.

I would assume most guys who teams are risking in expansion draft likely carry term and salary. Leafs can't add a ton of salary due to the mismanagement of the cap by Dubas.

They can add a bunch of salary at this point in time can’t they? And sort it out before the season starts.

I would add Kerfoot to the protected list. A # 3 center, who can play wing and top 6, kill penalties, plays with an edge at only 3.5m. Why protect one of Holl or Dermott. Both are # 5 or 6 D and are basically interchangeable.

It makes sense to me, if you can get a guy at a discounted trade value.

Pretty sure Carolina cant protect Foegele for example, and he'd be a good hard working middle 6 winger who should be reasonably cheap to re-sign.

Then protect 7-3-1, including Kerfoot. If they take Holl, oh well, we'll figure it out.

OK till we got to "plays with an edge". He had 16 penalty minutes last year, combining regular season and playoffs. He's part of the big softy group which we need to move out of town IMHO. Kadri played with an edge but he had his faults too.

I think we can make a move for another Forward still even after Mccann:

Tavares
Matthews
Marner
Nylander
Mccann
Kerfoot
XXX

Muzzin
Rielly
Brodie

Expose Dermott/Holl - If Dermott gets taken, we slot in Sandin, if Holl gets taken, Liljegren gets his long awaited opportunity.

But Kerf actually isn't a center although I think they hoped for that when they traded for him. Only 300 draws last year and 40% success. For comparison Spezza took 480 FO and played 3 less minutes a night. McCann is actually a little better on the dot as well as cheaper and better offensively. I think Bozak can probably match Kerfoot's offense and is an actual center who they can likely get for $2M or less.

Also, do we actually have a decent sample size to confirm Dermott can play the right side? Legit question, I don't know. He looked at lot worse this season than last so letting Holl go may mean Lily gets in whether he is legitimately ready or not or they resign and elevate Bogo to the second pair. A bit of an adventure in either of these scenarios.

Sandin for Dermott is not nearly as risky as replacing a 21 minute a night Holl with an AHL player. It would be vastly preferable if Sandin and Liljegren forced their way in during the season rather than dropping them in to fill newly created holes. If Kerfoot goes I think they have a better chance at a seamless patch than messing with the D. I don't dislike him but he did not deliver close to $3.5M in value.

Liljegren should get his opportunity with Bogosian gone. If Holl is gone, then we likely turn to Dermott to handle 20+ minutes and get a UFA to play with Liljegren.

Sandin should not be slotted in under any circumstance.

If Hyman is getting what he is going to get, Kerfoot easily provided 3.5 mill in value.

I posted this not aware of the McCann deal, I never implied RW. Kerfoot > Bozak.
I think Seattle will tale McCann

There is more to playing centre than taking faceoffs. Spezza often took faceoffs, but played the wing or skated off the ice on a pk.
