With the official news today that the Toronto Maple Leafs are playing the Detroit Red Wings outdoors on January 1, 2017 in the Centennial Classic at BMO Field in Toronto, I was wondering would they ever consider playing the Canada - USA game on New Years Eve there the night before?

Could be cool but don't know how it would work with ticket sales and how the teams would prepare.

I hope not. I really hate outdoor games. Haven't watched one in 5 years. They are so overdone. It's alright for just a regular season NHL game, other than a 3 point game, not really that much on the line. but for such a high intensity short tournament game, leave the gimmicks to the NHL, please. The NHL is good at gimmicks, or not good depending on your interest level in those gimmicks.

I certainly hope not. I don't like watching the outdoor games, and I would prefer the Canadian team not have such a distraction. The WJC itself is spectacle enough.

That would be a freaking awesome idea - and ticket sales wouldnt be the issue.

But the game is simply too important

They're doing it in 2018 in Buffalo with a prelim game. Not sure if that is NYE or not, but I would think they are going to save the first WJC outdoor game for then. They seemed to make a pretty big deal about it during the announcement.

Amen.

Surely some fans might not like an outdoor game, but if you think these kids who are used to playing in front of a couple thousand a night in juniors or college wouldn't want to play an outdoor game in front of a large number of fans (70,000+ in Buffalo's case) than you are wrong.

If you gave them the choice of playing an outdoor game or winning the WJC, what do you think they'd choose?

That one stupid gimmick game could have a significant impact on the standings, and ultimately the championship. This is not 1 game out of 82 in the middle of the season.

I certainly hope not, we need less outdoor games not more. Plus Canada/US doesn't need a gimmick to sell itself.
