But sure, that would be better off for him than many of the decisions he's been making thus far.

Petry/Holl he could've done without, but outside of that I think he's been fine.

Free agents for a rebuilding team are always tough, you need vets, but you're never fully sure what you're getting after they get their deals. And then you typically have to pay premium on top of that. Compher & Copp could've turned out better, but they were playing well on their previous teams.

Someone said Holland left the Red Wings in shambles, and I completely agree. As a GM, you can't start with a much worse situation than Yzerman did. Whoever took over pretty much had to wait out a couple years and watch the team lose. After that they haven't been horrible.

A bubble team is on par with expectations where they should be at this point IMHO. There's more playoff-capable teams in the League than ever before in my opinion, it's hard to make it, and it's especially hard to break out of the bubble. You need big time difference makers and those don't grow on trees. Patrick Kane was worth a shot.

I'd give him a chance to try to get them over the hump and see some of those prospects get in the action. Whoever gets hired as the next coach will be a big deal as well. If he fails with these things then it's time to move on.

Most GM's are in denial about where they are in their rebuild, which is why they get fired. Yzerman has basically hit on all of his 1st round picks since he's been the GM, so far.

Has he made some mistakes with signing Free Agents? Maybe. But the quality of the market is a massive factor. When you only have washed up versions of Kane and Tarasenko to choose from, as your big offseason signings, it's not like you have a quality buffet to choose from. And the prospects who they are holding a spot for, aren't ready. So might as well fill it with someone who "might" be capable.

I think if he had to do it over again, and Yzerman knew what kind of "effort"/"difference" some of the players were going to make on the progress of the team, I might think that he would have maybe pushed to have one or two more prospects on the team, last year or this year.

Treliving got the leafs playing good hockey.

Coaching change + defense additions + goalie addition has us playing like a team that can compete in the playoffs and not a team that Panthers/Bostons will laugh at to play in a round.

Treliving hasnt sold any big future assets either so he has been better than I would have thought so far in toronto.

The Wings just need to get lucky on a few picks and have a few current prospects pan out and they’ll be solid for a while again.

Not every team is lucky enough to have a Crosby or McDavid fall into their laps.
