Should icing be applied to power-plays as well?

I was taking a shower and thinking the other day, why not calling icing during the power-play? So, when a team is on the power-play, and the opposing the team ices the puck, it should be called icing. This will force the team on the penalty kill to score a shorthanded goal, which could produce more goals. But at the same time, it's risky which would increase the chances for the team on the power-play to score goals.

What do you guys think?

I'm pretty sure they looked at doing this at some point relatively recently. I'll see if I can find a link.

No because teams will ice it anyway and the stoppages will kill the flow of the game and extend the game further.

It's such a dumb idea. It's called "special teams" for a reason. It's a special and specific part of the game that is supposed to be different from the rest of the game.

I never understood why a team who takes a penalty was given an advantage in the first place. Hate how teams can just ice the puck with no consequence. You took a penalty, you're short a man and you should have to play like that. I would like to see short-handed teams get called for icing, it'll force them to actually play hockey rather than smack the puck as hard as you can. I'm sure there's arguments for both sides but i would like to see this idea at least given a shot during pre-season or something to see how it actually affects the game.

Being down a man and being able to ice the puck is not an advantage because if it were, teams would be a lot more potent scoring goals short-handed and obviously they are not. It's done to keep the game going more than anything else because teams will ice the puck whether or not you call it or not.

If you take away the option to ice it, the only choice coaches will have left on the PK will be to abuse the shot-blocking collapsing style. Incentivizing the defending team to win possession (by giving them the option to clear the zone easily once they do) leads to riskier plays instead of just trying to prevent clean shots on net.

I don't think this will change PP scoring significantly, but it would lead to more injuries almost guaranteed.

Doing that would give the referees an even bigger impact on the games... for that reason alone its not worth it... like others have said, they should try to improve 5on5 scoring not PP scoring

No because it would take away the chance for a team to actually GAIN momentum by coming up with a great kill, which usually consists of several clears of the puck out of the zone. And as a fan, I know that I also get a certain satisfaction when my team clears the puck to the other side of the rink on the PK, and you can also hear the fans at the game applaud when the home team is on the PK and they clear the puck.

Yes it should, the constant dumping of the puck during penalty kills is tedious.

One could argue that 5 on 4 is different than 5 on 5.

EDIT:

An alternative could be paused time on the penalty when the defensive team ices the puck. In this scenario, there is no whistle and the game clock keeps running, but the penalty clock stops. If they PK team wanted to drain the clock, they would have to skate the puck past the red line before they can dump it.

I'm all for it. Get better skill on the PK, it's a good thing.

It should eliminate more of the useless contact, stickwork, and interference that does nothing good for the game on top of it.

maybe a half measure might be to return the puck to the zone, but allow changes.

It would lead to much sloppier play. Penalties in general would probably go down as it would be such a huge disadvantage and players would be more careful. Not sure if would open up 5on5 more though. In theory perhaps. But the refs pretty much decide when they want to call a penalty anyways so who knows?

Offensive zone start for the PP team when the PK team ices it but allow changes? Think that's a better idea to be honest. Constant icings would just create more problems then solve IMO.
