Should a "C" or "A" ever be put on Goalie?

Ok so Nabby, brings so much to locker in terms of leadership and experience. But is it against hockey tradition to put a "C" or "A" on a goalie? I know that they are stationary and not all over the ice like other players, but that doesn't mean they can't be a leader. My opinion goaltender is the most important position on the ice. So can't a goalie be part of the captain contingency of a team? Let me know your thoughts.

typically no, not unless you want him skating out of the crease to the scorer's table every time there's a penalty.

There's been plenty of teams where the goalie has been a vocal leader in the lockerroom (Hextall, Dryden, etc.) but they just never gave him the C/A logistically .

Yes. I have never understood why the NHL did not allow this.

It should be allowed to go to whoever you want. On that note though a team that wins has more than one true C or A.
those letters really mean nothing

goalies aren't allowed to serve as captains or alternate captains — it would be difficult to have them communicate with refs, which is the entire point of the position.

No

And to add; A goaltender should only wear one of four numbers;

1
29
30
31

I remember when John Davidson wore 00.....What a tool!

These guys have it right. Part of your job as a captain is to communicate with the referees. Whenever there is a controversial play, the refs almost always talk to the players first. Those players then go tell the coach, and if the coach wants a further explanation, he then calls over the referee.

Goalies can be captains of a team, but can't wear the C or A because of the logistic side of being a captain.

Luongo was captain of the Canucks for a couple of seasons.
I thought I remember him with the C at one point. There is no rule in the NHL as to who can or can not be named a Captain although I don't think it's a good idea to designate a goalie as your Captain, maybe an alternate though. And Nabokov absolutely should not be named Captain!:shakehead

goalies can't wear a C or A on the ice, though. the league doesn't care about who teams refer to as their leaders on the lockerroom.

I understand, but hypothetically speaking lets just say Nabby was wearing an "A". Streit would still be able to talk to the refs/

Luongo never wore a C. Goalies can't be on ice captains. Obviously anyone can be a "team captain." You need to differentiate the two.

No way a goalie should ever be considered captain. No way.

Imagine having to answer stupid questions from reporters who are trying to get under your skin after having a bad game, letting in 4-5 goals and getting pulled (which happens to even the best elite goaltenders).

No need for that kind of additional outside pressure. Goalies need to stay sharp and drown out the outside noise. Let them focus on their own game, not anyone else's. They can't be distracted with that garbage, cause once they're distracted it's over.

No goalie should have to bear the type of additional pressure that comes with being captain or alternate captain. All they should be worried about is stopping the puck.

And for the record i love nabby's attitude, and love his candid interviews. And the reason why he projects that loose type of personality is because the isles are doing it right and letting him focus on doing his job and that's it.

Your leader is your leader...If a team deems a goaltender a captain or Alternate I would not mind them wearing a letter...

But for the Isles sake thank god its against the rules because knowing Wang and Snow we would have had the same captain for 6 years now and he would be playing in Bridgport this year...

Luongo had the 'C' for a bit. However being designated as a captain you wear a stiched letter on your jersey. The Canucks got around that one by having Luongo put a C on his mask at the chin area. They then has 3 'alternates'.

Stupid technicalities.

35 and 39 are super common for goalies as well...more common then 1 and 29 nowadays
1 seems to be alot less common today. Besides Luongo and Mason (in Columbus at least), I dunno who else wears #1 anymore
