Shin pad tape alternative

It seems that tape is a necessary evil for wearing shin pads, even those with straps which seem to be put on pads as much for show as for function.

That being said, putting scotch tape on around my shin pads would seem rather wasteful and inefficient.

Has anyone tried an alternative, something like this:

I have heard that those don't work too well, can't remember the exact reason though so my opinion isn't worth much here. What do ya have against shin tape though?

I buy electrical tape at Walmart for 57 cents a roll. You can get different colors in the auto department but they charge more for colors.

I like black so it works for me for 57 cents a roll.

I also buy their athletic white tape packs in the sporting dept where they sell jocks and compression shorts for taping my stick blades as they sell it for much less than a sports store does. I buy 5 packs of wide white for $6 and it is the same quality as what you buy in a hockey shop.

That's what I've used for a long time now. Got tired of paying for tape, would break during games, etc.. The shin tights give you a nice, secure, snug feel from your shin pads. They don't move around during games, you don't have to adjust your shin pads during games, put them over your shin pads and you're good to go.

I was just saying what I could remember. Of course the company will try and make their product sound as good as it can, thats why I try not to buy anything without a second opinion.

But don't pay any mind to me unless I can find my sources...

You can always tie old skate laces around your guards outside your socks. I see a lot of guys do this instead of use tape.

i use old laces too, but i dont want to look like a goon so i put them on the inside of my socks over the outside of the shinpads. it works pretty well

A guy I play with sometimes does that .... I told him to part with a couple of bucks and get some tape

I have a pair of mission shin pads ( I think they are mission, will double check if you really want to know) and they have the straps built in. The straps do a double wrap around, really stretchy, and lots of velcro. They are SO comfortable and I never use tape. I love them.

Actually, they kind of wrap around the legs like this @ symbol. So you pull them tight one way across the back of your legs, they go through the holder / eyelet, then you pull them back the other way, all the way around the front of your shin pad, then velcro at the back. Hope that helps

Interesting. I have the Nike Bauer XXXX's shin pads, and they have a longish velcro strap/arm, but the pads seem built as if tape or something else would still be used to secure them.

As a hockey newbie, it is a bit odd that the pads are sold in this seemingly incomplete fashion; why don't the manufacturers just provide good enough straps like with elbow pads so tape, etc., is not needed?

I've done several different things to keep my shin pads in place. started out with regular tape. switched to postal tape when I found out how great it worked. when the post office stopped giving it out I switched to Itech elastic straps. these worked good for awhile but eventually the elastic stretched out too much so I switched to laces. I like that but every now and then the laces would come untied in the middle of a game. dangerous. now I use a strap that's almost like netting. it's called Costrap or something really similar. sorry, can't find a link. I hope they still make them......

I have a team mate that swears by the shintight won't skate a game without them. I have never tried them as I am for the most part an inline player with Mission Boss pants with the shin strap around back. If you are an inline guy at all with the Mission shin strap around the back of the pants it eliminates the need for tape.

The elasticity of that product will eventually wear out, and you'll be left with socks that look like underwear.

The old hockey lace idea sounds intriguing... I think I'll try it sometime.

I agree with the eventually but my team mate has been using the same pair with success since 2000 seems like in 10 years he has done a pretty good job offsetting his tape costs.

My son uses the shin tights and has for at least 3 years and he likes them and he's pain-in-the-ass picky. Not a shining endorsement, but they must be pretty good for him to stay with them.
