After getting brutally outcoached and losing in the first round two years in a row, receiving any sort of extension is pretty generous for Keefe.

On the bright side, this at least shows that Leafs ownership isn't committing long-term to our clown-show management and coaching.

They'll need to show some real results in the playoffs or they're all gone.

If you are serious about your team being a contender, your coach needs to be under contract beyond the current season. They need to know that you are there for the long haul and that they aren't playing for a lame duck coach.

All Leaf fans hope he succeeds.

I am equally bad at my job as Keefe as being a coach. Why don't I get an extension?
What about giving people extension or a raise based on performance? Maybe wait until the year end to see how that pans out ?

You lost to a zamboni driver. Check
Losing to Columbus at home playing 5 games. Check
Losing to Montreal being up 3-1 at home again. Check
Monumental comeback loss to Ottawa - Check

All that gets you an extension instead of being fired?

but as some of you said. I must be just complaining. Let me put my happy face on

Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z
You sound like my ex-GF. Any argument automatically involves anything bad that ever happened and then we start from there LOL

It's no coincidence the top two were in the final, as for Jack, not so good.

Teams that limit goals-against have goalies with high save-percentages.

Truly ground-breaking stuff.

I don't think this should surprise anyone.

His first year he takes over a team mid season, then has to deal with the Covid disruption and strange playoff bubble. Hard to take much away from that year for better or for worse.

Last season again, not a normal one, only inner divisional play (and not even the teams regular division), no training camp. Does well in the regular season by winning the division and flops in the playoffs.

Front office doesn't want a lame duck coach (and not should they, the last thing this team needs is another level of media pressure/drama).

A short extension to see how he fairs over the next 1-2 normal 82 game seasons seems a perfectly reasonable decision to make.

I'm thinking his playoff performance will mean a lot to his long term future

I have zero complaints during the regular season but his last 2 playoffs haven't exactly been great, hrs bedn out coached twice imo

When they tune you out, they tune you out. And if the reviews on the All or Nothing series are true sounds like the tuning out may have begun,

Not sure what the big deal is. It’s a coach not a player. If things go bad he’ll be gone. Of things go good great he’s back and has a short term contract.

What has he done to deserve an extension? Why is he being “rewarded” for being out coached two years in a row? Let him sit on the hot seat, it’s about time, but of course Dubas doesn’t roll that way.

Remember the Ron Wilson situation and his extension? This has a somewhat familiar feeling. Hopefully things turn out very differently.

I really don't get this belief among some that a coach with an expiring contract is somehow a distraction. A minor one, perhaps, but not remotely close to having key players in a UFA year. There is nothing wrong with letting a coach earn an extension based on performance. That said, unlike players, if MLSE doesn't care about the $$$ then it makes no difference in the end. If they clean house next summer, there will be no Sheldon Keefe cap hit to worry about!

Insider Trading: Sheldon Keefe extension; Jack Eichel talks still at a stalemate - TSN.ca

Leafs, Keefe agree to extension

The Leafs locked up head coach Sheldon Keefe Thursday as he agreed to a two-year contract extension. What went into the deal and why only two years?

LeBrun: Head coach Sheldon Keefe has signed a two-year extension. He was entering the final year of his contract and I think that’s exactly why the Leafs organization felt it was important to remove that distraction in the crazy Toronto market that he was not a lame duck coach. And as soon as they have a losing streak, this was not a narrative. So, they’ve signed him to a two-year extension – and listen, it’s not a five-year extension. I’m sure a lot of people are saying why sign this guy to an extension now after they’ve lost out in the opening round of the playoffs two years straight. On the flip side, this is his first full 82-game season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. They believe in him, but it’s a prove-me contract still at two years, not a five-year extension.

Maybe they want to lock him in for cheap in the event he’s coach of the year and the leafs win a chip?

It isn’t a distraction because everyone knows if they don’t get out of the first round he’s fine, regardless if he’s signed for 10 years. And yes, I thought about Wilson telling the media, that was a bizarre moment.

@DavePoulin4PM
You didn't include that Keefe losing to the Erie Otters had the likes of Dermott, Strome, Brown, Debrincat and McJesus. Would take a hell of a tactician to beat that lineup when his most notable players were Bunting, Ritchie, McCann, D'Angelo and Nurse.

Ron Wilson received a 1 year extension halfway through the season.

This Keefe extension, agreed to in the offseason, takes him through the next 3 seasons.

And oh yeah...

Can anyone explain getting worked up over a coaches contract like it has any relevance to whether he will continue if the team fails? It is literally a non factor. Calm yourself.

exactly. If Leafs can eat up the monster contract of Babcock, Keefe’s will be no issue for the deep MLSE pockets if he is fired mid season or before the contract expires.

whiners and complainers ......... come on down ..................
are you people really complaining about a 2 year show me contract ? like seriously ?

Haha you should look at his high danger sv % for the playoffs.

But again...we aren't allowed to talk about that.

It always the same people.
Extensions don’t mean anything especially when it comes coaches.
If he fails, this is not going to stop him from being fired.

Does it though? I mean you could have easily said we will revaulate end of the year. Based on his performance and stuff

Or does Dubas feels that he's a goner anways, so let me just give him free money because Dubas is actually a nice guy. Kinda like Simmonds
Neither.

2017-18 Regular season record points and wins. Lost in the first round. Babcock is a genius. That’s the logic right?

Checkmate.
