why do believe he's so attached to Keefe/Dubas ?

AM isn't an idiot , he knows full well any coach/GM will kiss his ass , it's that way in every sport .

I don't know if I believe he's attached, but I think he values them both. They've made him rich, Keefe has helped him achieve his best statistical years. Keefe has given him lots of ice time and finally gave him the opportunity to play with Marner. Whereas it was the opposite with Babcock. I don't think he's attached to them, but if I'm Matthews looking at the situation, can he really blame anyone besides himself or his teammates for the lack of success? Keefe and Dubas have pretty much given him everything.

The team finding some measure of post-season success by winning a few playoff series under a new coach and GM would do wonders for Matthews' relationship with new management. One would think.

Keefe didn’t need to explain or clarify anything he said to anyone.

You call a dead turd a dead turd when you see a dead turd, which is what he did.

That anything he said wasn’t obvious to each player, and needed clarifying tells me that maybe they just don’t have it between the ears, more than anything else.

Looking for a huge effort tonight!

Go Leafs Go!

You can't re-sign Dubas on the premise that he has a good relationship with AM. Especially when they fail again this year (sorry this roster isn't winning anything but I'll gladly eat my words if wrong). And especially when he botched contract negotiations the first time around
Besides, Dubas isn't obligated to sign an extension. He can leave if he wants. I don't think any relationship with the Matthews camp will make or break his status.

Mathews made himself rich
Mathews would have been an elite player under any GM/Coach

if who and how much he played under Babs was that big an issue for him i'm sure he could have got whatever he wanted if he was so inclined to do so

What about the stats that actually matter
shot location/volume stats trumps everything , lol

possibly, but I do know that his ice time went up a whole lot once Babcock left. Matthews yes has always been elite, but coaching and usage has helped him quite a bit. There are a few changes, in terms of power play ice distribution, obviously getting the opportunity to play along side Marner has helped. It's obviously a give and take. Matthews is an exceptional talent, but you need a coach who is willing to let you be you and if we're honest Babcock was trying to suppress matthews offensive ability and force him to play a specific way.

Was anyone else surprised by Keefe during “All For Nothing”? The Leafs had a lot of input into the production, which made his portrayal even more alluring to me. We all made fun of Babs and his mono-syllabic commentary, he was eloquent at times but many found him pretty simple. With Keefe, I was actually quite surprised how he tried to motivate, he’s supposed to be this new school coach, and he came across as some profanity laden stereotypical low rent coach. Every other word the f word, I found him completely underwhelming , generally pedestrian and frankly wondering how long until players tuned him out.

Couldn't agree more. I saw nothing insightful coming from him for the entire series.

I found that "inspirational" speech before the Game 6 OT against the Habs to a group of professional athletes to be embarrassing.

Possibly just my impression but I've never found them to be that successful when thrown together.

They haven't been, but I think in part thats because of lack of opportunity to find chemistry.

Personally I'd split Matthews and Marner up for a few games at the very least to send a message if they want to keep playing together they've got to bring it every night

Put Nylander back with Matthews and Marner back with Tavares.

These kids have taken advantage of the gm now doing it to the coach... They played terrible and are offended that the coach said they did... Yet theve lost like 6 or 7 first rounds on a row against less talented teams... Maybe attitude is the reason

This is what I thought I was seeing too. Marner basically saying the players put Keefe in his place (But we have doors for a reason). Then Keefe coming out, hat in hand and walking it back sort of without really clarifying what he actually meant.

Maybe I'm reading too far into it but it seems a little fractured between the team (maybe just the stars) and the coach.

I know they are off to a decent start at 3-2 and they won last night, but you could argue they should be 5-0 4-1 at worst but they have yet to have the dominant performance they are capable of it.

It feels to me like they have stopped listening to Keefe

I don't know if they've tuned him out but i do know there isn't a coach who could make this team look good if M and M aren't producing at a high pace .

we aren't going to get much production from our bottom 6 or our D so if our top line isn't on we're going to struggle to win

no?

the leafs have looked tired which is a bit different than being indifferent

they still seem engaged but are just behind the play

Too early to tell anything. Working in new players and jumbling our D has disrupted chemistry. Let's see where we are after a larger sample.

Yeah Keefe is telling them "stop bobbling pucks, please complete your passes" and they're just choosing not to listen because something something Fortnite.

Generally it seems the effort is there, at least among most players, but they are playing extremely sloppy, undisciplined hockey right now. Seems like they still have not managed to shake the same bad habits they've had from day one.

On the bright side I could have sworn I saw Engvall finish not one but two checks last night. Although checking may have been too strong of a word, he at least used his body.

And maybe it was because he was facing his brother and/or his first crack in the lineup this year with a golden opportunity to stick, but Robertson delivered. Hopefully his enthusiasm/hunger rubs off on players that seem to be so far not playing like there's something to play for.
