The main problem I see is Grier isn't acquiring many picks, and isn't taking as many swings on young, bigger players putting up good numbers. The goal should be to pick as many Protas and Waltons as possible because them becoming solid trading pieces at the very least is pretty reliable.
Bystedt 6'4, Lund 6'2'', Halttunen 6'3'', Chernyshov 6'3'', Svoboda 6'3'', Musty 6'2''. They clearly have a size first policy in the first couple rounds outside of exceptional talent like Smith/Celebrini.

Maybe some of Musty's homework while rehabbing was media training. Well done nipping that whole story in the bud so he can hopefully have a good rest of the season in Sudbury with no drama (finally) now that he's officially stuck there.
I don't have access -- is there a tl;dr?

Those aren't unfair picks. Defense is a better scenario, but the forwards are too reliant on everyone hitting and most aren't high upside. Svoboda and to a lesser extent Wetsch aren't high upside, but I'd feel better if they had a bunch of those types or slightly better and hoped for one or two to exceed expectations.

Just said he wanted to go somewhere that was gonna be competing in his last year in the OHL and now that they've made moves to compete, he's 100% bought in.

An alternate version

He also had high praise for the coaching staff and said, that his goals is to play in the NHL (really) and that the staff is „all about detail and playing the right way“.

He also said that this is „hopefully“ his last year in the OHL/CHL.

On the drafting for wingers with size, I’m fine with it. We have three 5’11-6’0 forwards that make up the core of the forwards. Tofolli is 6’, and while he takes a ton of abuse and is hard on opposing dmen, isn’t really adding size or physicality. Graf (6’1 but light) and Zetterlund (5’11 built like a fridge) aren’t huge. The next guy most likely to be around for three years is Kovalenko, he’s 5’10. Our forwards are small, light, and skilled.

You can compliment them with size in free agency, but typical you are getting guys who are less physical (Wennberg), less skilled (Kunin next summer), or likely to fall off. Power forward contracts in free agency are often dangerous. Look at the 2016 UFA frenzy contracts of Lucic, Ladd, Okposo, Brouwer, and Backes. It’s a graveyard,

Everyone agrees you need three of an elite center, another elite forward, an elite dman, and elite goalie, but almost universally cup teams have at least one hard hitting, relentless, immovable power forward as well (Stone, Tkachuk/Barkov/Bennett, Brown, Toews/Byfuglien, Lucic/Marchand, Landeskog, Schenn/Barbashev).

If even one of the six big forwards Grier’s drafted/targted in the top 45 hit (Musty, Bystedt, Edstrom, Cherny, Lund, Halt; and I bet he takes two more between this year and next); he’s saved himself having to go find a power forward in the minefield that is free agency. In trade, they’re also very expensive (look at Timo).

Grier seems to look at the draft like this:

Top 15: Franchise Cornerstone at C/D
Late 1st/early 2nd: Top 6 forward with size, good skating dman
3-5th: NHL guys but bottom of the lineup (5-6 D, 4th line F, goalies)
6-7th: Boom Bust

Hitting on 1 out of 7 top 45 picks for a top 6 power forward is poor, but getting that guy at usually below market rate for their 25-29 years (and playoff motivated by an upcoming $7x7+ cap increase contract) could be the difference of winning a cup.

Also, imagine we end up with Hagens this year and Misa next, a great outcome. However, we’d be so small. Imagine if instead of the big forwards we’d gone with guys like Cristal and Nadeau (who I really liked at the Musty and Halt picks). They may end up being better, they way even hit while our guys bust, but they’d also be run over. Griers trying to build a balanced org.

Quick note - we don't have Edstrom anymore.

I suppose my point is refuted if the one who hits is the one he traded, fair point, I’m more highlighting that when it comes to non-elite assets, big forwards are a good option to target. I also think any of those guys will be considered acceptable options to move on for core pieces.

I don't think this is how NHL GMs look at drafts. They will always draft BPA; it's just that BPA varies according to the team's roster. When teams are rebuilding, they tend to go for projects (boom/busts) because they're trying to build their core. When they are contending, they'll often go for safe players because filling out the lineup with cheap, sure-fire NHL talent is important.

Look at the Sharks:

1) Before they got Boyle/Blake, they swung for Wishart and Petrecki
2) They traded many picks while competing, but when they did draft they went for safety (Nieto, Coyle)
3) In 2012, after the window looks closed, they swing for Hertl
4) After the window looks open again, they go for the safe pick in Mueller
5) After the year 2014 is mysteriously skipped, the window is closed again and the Sharks swing for the fences in Goldobin
6) DW says they are competing again, and they go for the relatively safe Meier.
7) The next few years, the Sharks are putatively competing and they go extremely safe (Gambrell, Ferraro, Norris)
8) Before the Karlsson trade the Sharks are looking to refresh again, and they swung for Merkley.

2022 is a bit odd as the picks seem a little safer to my eye, but the past few years have been the Sharks going for high-risk players.

Well most later picks who become top 6 or strong middle 6 options are known quantities at the draft or by D+1. Right now the forwards look just alright.

You'd like more 3rd+4ths to get the occasional player.

I have to say the anticipation of Chernyshov coming to Saginaw is hopefully not going to be much longer. Have been waiting to see
Epperson Misa Chernyshov
Mangone Parekh on a PP together since I heard that he was coming.
Have a feeling when they play a few games these guys will be playing well and getting better.
Not to burst your bubble but think Chernyshov was assigned to the Sharks AHL team.
