Nylander is double vulnerable because he's underpaid. This makes him easiest to trade and the delta on this contract and his next contract is the biggest question mark. In a video game world, you offload Tavares so you have a fortune to reinvest in the team through free agency and also have the cash to re-focus on a core of Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Rielly, which is still pretty young. More likely, that one extra year of JT will probably cost us Willie.

That said, if we are smart and at the right time traded Willie for the right futures to support Matthews and Marner on their next deals, it's still ok. Life goes on.

Exactly. Losing Nylander hurts the scoring depth without a doubt, plus JT's continue decline.

But consider prospects like Knies and Roberston (and hopefully Amirov as a long shot)... it's not as grim of a future offensively retooling with Matthews and Marner.

The team could really benefit from a younger centre that can step into the #3C now and grow into the #2C role to supplant Tavares as he ages.

I mean does Colorado regret trading Duchene right now?

Newhook coming along to help Colorado, even if Newhook potentially goes.

Kinda sucks Amirov is a long shot at this point, I really wanted Schneider.

Knies could join the roster after his season is done.

Robertson, who knows?

88 should return an absolute haul if Mantha is any indication.

Yeah exactly. I'm afraid Willie views himself as being underappreciated and basically an afterthought after M&M, and based on a lot of posts here I'd say he's right. He probably feels like he provided huge bang for the buck on his contract (and he's right about that too) and wants to get paid on his next contract and it's hard to see us affording him AND our other stars.

An interesting poll would be, what is your preferred return for Nylander?

- a futures packages of picks/prospects (the best you can get)
- a traditional hockey trade to help them win now

I think ideally you find a young promising player breaking into the league with some other sweetness.

We had a franchise record season in 2018 yet Lou was still let go.

We fought a stacked Washington to a tight 6 games in 2017 and then a strong Boston team in 2018 to 7 games.

After last year, almost everyone agreed that the regular season has no meaning.

Yet now we are being told because of the record breaking regular season and because we had a close series against a good team, we are going to run it back with the same president who has been here for 8 years, the gm who has been in charge for 4 years and the coach who has been here for 2.5 years.

This franchise is a joke.

I was looking at Mercer and Blackwood as a basis for the deal.

I feel like NJD are hungry for success sooner rather than later.

I don't think it's all that grim, but the big question is do we have the afterburners for a huge cup push in the next few years? One thing that works for the Leafs dumpster dive of plug and play talent is they can hold up Michael Bunting as a great example of what can happen for your stats line if you come join the party. That's a legitimate way to get more talent in house.

And people wonder why some on this board are so pessimistic! 19years and counting.

LOL, not sure if serious. I can't be bothered to waste my time on all these individually but at the time, many of there moves were received very well by fans. The best example if perhaps Kapanen for a 1st - widely viewed as a steal for the Leafs. He's made mistakes for sure but everyone makes mistakes, a 1st for Foligno for example, I didn't like it at the time and it didn't work out well but most people here thought it was a great move - gotta go allin blah blah blah.

He made some good moves too, Dubas completely rebuilt the defence, that's a number of moves there, not going to bother listing them one by one.

Look at the roster when Dubas took over and look at the roster today, you tell me which one you prefer. And while I'm not happy with all the futures he traded away last season, I'm very happy that we haven't traded any top prospects with Dubas in charge and this season we didn't trade any first round picks as well while pretty much all the other contenders did.

Link?
The preference would be to continue with a proper rebuild rather than wasting assets and resources and then hoping you catch lightning in a bottle each year.

Going into his fifth year after having no success and we have no idea who will fill key positions next year.

How many more first round loses before you accept that dubas is trash?

When dubas was hired, there's no way you expected 4 first round exits in a row. Yet you think it's "good" to keep the person around who is in charge of a team that keeps failing?

Why are so many dubas fan boys still this delusional.
Even though what u say makes total sense, it’s also unfortunate that the year we are at our best and most ready to make a run we play the stacked defending 2 time Stanley cup champions In the first round and prob should have won as we may have been the better team, some stupid mistakes and questionable reffing didn’t help.

But yeah when is enough…enough

Tough one here

Worst part too is Shanny basically patted them on the head and welcomed back next year like they just went 7 games in the SC final and lost in an epic battle

I mean it's a press conference .. what benefit does he have to stir up drama in the media with threats and harsher language in the public eye? It would be rather dumb actually.

The reality is no one really knows what conversations happened behind closed doors.

Judging anything by a press conference is grasping at straws. The moves made in the off-season will be the most telling as to the direction of the club.

Just this frivolous use of draft picks in the 22 nhl entry draft alone might be reason enough for replacing Dubas...

why? washington couldn't get it done for years. and yet Ovie stayed and got it done there. first round or 2nd round or third round it's not winning the 4th round so let's not say "it's different." Washington perpetually were seen as a team that couldn't get it done, until they got it done. Ovie stayed to win it there. I don't understand why people are like OH WELL MATTHEWS IS GONNA GO. well what if he wants to stay [and let's just be clear, it's not like Matthews was perfection all several losses either, he has some goat horns to wear too]. and if he leaves, okay he leaves. move on.

I didn't watch the entire video. but what Shanahan said was that they won't be making changes - to make changes. but he never said everyone was safe. (Im also wondering what people were expecting - Shanahan to stroll up and like right there say "Well Kyle this saves me a phone call, you're fired, questions?" like come on y'all.

lol imagine he did that, based shanahan

cant wait to lose to the bruins in round 1 next season and then round 1 losses to the habs for the next 3 seasons after that when they have a wagon of a team with wright and bedard :D

You don't publicly announce your gm and coach are coming back and then weeks later fire one or both

Not surprised. Shanahan is promoting the losing culture. As long as the bank keeps rolling in, right!
