Masai kept tinkering the supporting cast hoping it would work out. Mainly bc he knows the top guys are not available. For years, Raptors prided themselves on having great depth and when it comes to playoffs, depth meant little.
Joseph was a bench player, he wasn’t sign to be anything but a bench player. Unless you think he was signed to replace Kyle. That’s like our bottom 6. Carroll was supposed to be the defensive stopper that would stop or at least contains Lebron. Bc he showed in a playoffs that he could. Ofcourse that didn’t happened.
Masai can and will make the tough decisions but Dubas can’t seem to do that yet.

Masai is also the best evaluator of draft talent in the game dude has hit on an insane amount of picks

The Leafs had around 50% of cap to 34/91/16/88 at the start of the 2019 season, and it looks likes he'll have the same thing at start of the 2022 season.

Yes, the global pandemic certainly affected the salary allocation "plan". But we've been told for some time now that the league is looking at a flat cap for at least a few seasons, (rumor I heard is 2025)

Given that, the question I have is why the GM hasn't adjusted the "plan" to address this allocation problem given has had around 26 months since the onset of the pandemic?
Addressing that situation might boil into that option to having Marner is better than having 2x 1sts and 2 x +B grade prospects + Jeff Petry and Kevin Hayes from UFA market. You aren't getting Hedman or Vasilevsky for Marner straight up. We know it pretty well that acquiring even elite 1st line forward is damn hard. Teams don't usually trade those elite players away.

Pandemic started during 2019-2020 season. Right when we were in worst cap crunch and it was most because of timing. We'd have this some problem with lightly better RFA contracts.

the crazy thing is Colangelo was way ahead of his time. The team he was trying to build would have been a championship team in todays day and age. Having your bigs be able to shoot 3's. Have your team full of shooters, with good rebounders. It's basically how the warriors are built. Bargnani is a player that would have tremendous success in the NBA today.

happens sometimes.
If he had a pulse, yes.

Just Marner for Helly straight up.
That’s a deal that could work for both teams

That's probably at least a package like Sandin, Robertson, and a 1st.

I'm perfectly fine doing that.
Idk about all 3 assets, that’s a lot for a goalie. Maybe 2 of them and something else less useful like a prospect from a tier below or a 3rd round pick or something.
Although I probably wouldn’t hang up the phone in anger if that came across my desk if I was KD considering they’re taking mrazek off my hands and it’s only $2.3m more in cap commitment for the same term to change Mrazek into Helle.
The idea of having to extend Nylander Matthews and Hellebyuck in one off season is panic inducing though. You’re committed to walking from both Brodie and muzzin and filling them with cheaper alternatives to lock up all 3 I think.

How many years did masai accomplish nothing before that deal? You’re right he fleeced NY in the bargnani trade but also had to give away assets to move off some brutal deals he signed.
Of course he made more than that one move, but that’s the one continually referenced around here as the kind of move the hockey club needs.
Which I would be on board with. If you can package Willy robertson and 25oa for mackinnon And compher I’m all for it. (That would be the comparable deal, that’s how ludicrous it was)
Most of you want to trade good players for nothing in the name of “depth” and “balancing” And then suggest a bunch of replacement level guys who can be picked up in FA every year.
How many playoff rounds did Masai win before the trade??

My god. You Dubas fanboys are REALLY grasping at straws now to defend his failures.

Two years of a Vezina-calibre goalie and they take a cap dump. It's a huge price to pay, but it also turns one of our biggest weaknesses into a huge strength.

That's likely the off-season that the cap jumps, so you can probably keep Matthews and whichever one of Nylander or Hallebyuck proves more valuable.

If the cap jumps sign all 3, let the old D men in muzzin and Brodie walk and find a couple cheap one year plug ins while waiting for the Tavares deal to expire.

They're not trading a top 5 goalie for trash.

Hagel got two firsts and a second chariot got a first. If they wanted to trade him they can get a mint.

“dUbAs FaN BoYs” Jesus that’s so so dumb

You're going to sound like a fan boy when you defend a dude who hasn't gotten out of the first round while shitting on a dude who won an NBA championship in one on the most difficult markets to do so in addition to a conference finals before that championship.

Then putting one on the market should bring quite a premium then.

why don't you take a good look at where the Raps were when he took over and how many rds he won before they actually won the title

and it's sad a few Leaf fans feel compelled to crap on Masai and the Raps in a pathetic attempt to defend Dubie's failure
Imagine shitting on another GM in another sport (Who actually won playoff rounds and 1 year made the conference finals in the said shitting part of the argument) to justify defending Dubas?

Remember how we played in game two and our coach saying "we came here for a split" after a game 4 embarrassment?

Might want to look at how the avs came out today instead of accepting our regime as ok

Especially one who saw it wasn't working and changed basically everything to get the title.

Then told his all star PG he could either get on board or he'd ship his ass to Memphis mid season.

Can you imagine dubas doing that?

I wasn’t shitting on him in my first post about him I literally said he’s the best executive in the nba. He still has a history of taking his time to make adjustments and was questioned for his loyalty to “his” guys.
He hit a grand slam with the Kawhi trade, if the same type of deal is available to Kyle I hope he makes it, otherwise considering how hard it is to amass elite skill in this league id rather hang onto the game breakers we have and fill in around the edges changing the secondary pieces around as needed.
Masai didn’t trade DD for line up filler he moved him for an upgrade a top 3 player in the nba at the time in a season when the conference was wide open with lebron having dipped for LA leaving a gaping goatse at the top of the conference, no one here has proposed an upgrade. It’s all for middle line up guys who can be found every off season.

This is how far down the tar pit that the Dubas fanclub has to go to defend him this year.

I don't think anyone remembers that because he actually said "We came on the road here, we got a split. We came out here it was a best-of-five series with three games in this building and two at home. Now it’s a best-of-three with two in our building so it’s a successful road trip in that sense."
