Even with 1M retain he is vastly overpaid for his play the past 2.5 seasons. You would have to take a bad contract coming back on top. I'd be surprised if he brings back anything more than a late first.

I don't think these are going to be easy trade talks, because I'm not sure the holdup has been his NMC, but rather the contract and Chicago's unwillingness to retain so much for so long to facilitate a trade.

I think they'd retain a little, but doubt that gets them to a point where teams are interested. I get the sense that Chicago thinks that if it starts contemplating heavy retention, then a heavily retained Jones should be really valuable. Yet I think other clubs view that as the bare minimum needed to get them to consider acquiring him, not reason to fork over a king's ransom.

There seems to be room between where the Blackhawks value a heavily retained Jones for five more years and where the rest of the league values that package. There's a decent chance they hold on to him. His increasingly clear desire for a trade might not matter very much.

Retention is simple for pending UFAs. It's a hell of a lot more complicated when it's for multiple years. Heavy retention over five years on a big contract? It's rarer than people think.

Dude has been in the NHL since 2013 and has 37 career playoff games. He makes 9.5 million. The math doesn't math.

It's not about sympathy, it's about understanding who's responsible for offering contracts to players.

He played on playoff teams for most of his career before coming to Chicago.

You can be upset at Jones all you want for his comments, but in no way did he "set the blackhawks back 5 years".

To me, he sounds frustrated with the lack of progress. The team is clearly failing to meet even the modest expectations people had coming into the season. I don't think he signed thinking they'd be contenders, but he probably hoped to play at least a few meaningful games as a Hawk.

It's one thing to miss the playoffs in the final weeks of the season, but never playing any meaningful games for years is pathetic, and that's on the organization.

This is not worth 8M for 5 more years for someone who is already in his 30s.



6-7M is fair depending on his planned usage on his new team.

They were a lotto team for each of the 2yrs prior to his arrival. And Kane and Toews weren't getting any younger. Keith was gone, Was pretty obvious that the Hawks were on the way down before the trade

2021 they had the hurricanes panthers and lightning in the central along with Dallas, a still good predators team at the time. Even the worst two teams Detroit and Columbus did a lot better than any of the other bottom 2 teams in the other divisions.

The 3rd place central team (Tampa) would have won the West division, the Canada division, and the metro division. The bottom 3 in the central have drastically better odds not playing in the best division.
