This trade is similar to the Kessel trade Toronto made at the start of their rebuild.

Toronto gets:
Jones @ 7.25 AAV (2M retained)
2nd 2022

Hawks get:
1st pick 2022
Nick Robertson
Joey Anderson
3rd 2022 (Sens)
Justin Holl

Hawks reasoning: They are in a rebuild and have sold every other piece other than Kane/Toews. They upgrade from a 2nd to a first and add a top prospect and a 3rd. Moving on from Jones makes sense in a rebuild.

Leafs reasoning: They add a player they believe is a good player and will rebound and be a top pairing dman for them. They use Muzzin's LTIR space + dumping Holl to add a top pairing 6 foot 4 RD. They use up some of their prospect cupboard but also gain contract flexibility dumping Anderson. Because of the tightness to the cap and the reputation of the player, Hawks retain 2M which is similar to the 1.5 the Leafs retained on Kessel.

---

Toronto gets:
JVR 50% retained (3.5 AAV) UFA end of season

Flyers get:
2nd 2022 (Hawks)
SDA
Engvall

Leafs reasoning: They have a hole on LW and JVR has had success here before. Big man who will play well around the net and on the 2nd PP unit. Likely lines up with Tavares and gives the team more size and scoring.

Flyers reasoning: They get a pick, prospect, and a player back. Engvall himself can be flipped for a mid round pick at the TDL as well to a team looking for depth or penalty killers.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
JVR - Tavares - Nylander
Holmberg - Kerfoot - Jarnkrok
ZAR - Kampf - Malgin

Rielly - Brodie
Gio - Jones
Sandin - Liljegren

Jvr looks fairly cooked , he’s a pp specialist at this point . I’m not sure Jones Is great value even at 2 million retained .

Am I the only one who thinks Jones is over rated ? Why are we paying Chicago to get them out of that disgusting contract.

JVR is trash at this point

That's pretty bad for Chicago. A low first means little if you're trading a high second. The "top prospect" doesn't really move the needle. And the Hawks have the honour of having $2M in dead cap for the next 7 years.

i thought Jones doesn’t want to play in Canadian market. I seem to remember that report while he was with bluejackets. If true I can’t see him going to hockey mad market in Toronto.

He's definitely over rated and over paid. Chicago still isnt paying $14 million over next 7 years for a low 1st and flotsam
They might as well ride out the contract, they're in full rebuild mode now. Doubt they'll find any takers for Jones even with 2M retention.

The last thing we need is to try and cram another big contract into our cap structure. We need more depth, not less.

JVR is done.

You want the Hawks 2nd for the Leafs 1st? What that going to end up be moving up 7-8 spots at the max? Hilarious. Don’t blame you for trying to sneak that in there. Chicago isn’t retaining 2m per to get nothing

Jones is playing fine. No rebound needed.
Anything is possible, to use a worn out line “Gretzky got traded” but Jones would be a steal today with 2 mill retained. In 3 years his full deal isn’t expensive.

How about remove 2022 (really 2023) 2nd from Chicago.
Switch 20(23) 3rd from Ottawa to a 2023 2nd as cost for taking Holl and Anderson.

No point for the Hawks. They aren't in a cap crunch and won't be for some time. That money is already committed to Jones so they'd need something really good coming back (which they won't get) if they're gonna retain for the rest of eternity.

The Leafs 1st vs the Hawks 2nd is barely an upgrade and the rest of the pieces don't do much for their rebuild at all.

Hawks are basically stuck with Jones for a while, which is fine.

while jones is overpaid even at 7 million he's still has more value than that garbage package.

Toronto need to change some but idk..... I really like Seth but he aint been it for a few years. Toronto should keep looking for defensemen with those assets.

No interest in Jones' contract. I would rather pry Murphy away from the Hawks.
