Smejkal is expected to play for Czechia at the upcoming 2023 IIHF World Hockey Championship. I learned that beside the fact his name is Jiri Smejkal.

Article doesn't say but assuming it's a 2-way contract at entry-level.

It's an ELC, it can only be a 2-way contract

love this. not because i have ever seen him play but im convinced these type of depth signings of in prime european talents is so much better than out of prime NHL cast offs dorion gets like Hamonic, Brassard, etc.

6 ft 4 220 pounds and PPG in top euro leagues. cheering for him.

If this guy is better than brassard then it’s an absolute steal. There’s a reason why brassard is here. And smejkal was over there lol. While in his. Prime

They got the donuts? Excellent....
When I first saw the pic of him, I thought he was some grizzled Euro vet in his mid-30s but he's only 26? And he's already played in North America for the WHL? Seems like a low risk signing for a guy who might bring some size and scoring to the bottom six.

Assen na yo!

Pronman had him ranked six in his recent list of undrafted FA's

"He’s a big, powerful winger with good skills who can help on both special teams. His skating is just OK and whether he will score in North America is a question, but his style lends itself to a real chance to play NHL games."

the brassards and hamonics of today are not the brassards and hamonics of past days. need young energetic legs with skill, not old guys barely hanging on.

Nice, been too long since the Sens have had a Czech on the ice. I can provide no insight into him other than the fact that he was on the Olympic team last year and was one of the bright spots on an otherwise underwhelming team.

IDK, I thought both Brass and Ham were fine this year.

But back to the signing. Love it. Nothing to lose and everything to gain. Wish the Sens would do more of these.

Mike Richards is at home thinking “I could easily cross check this guy in the face into the net after a failed breakaway”

Fun fact, both Jiri and Boom Boom Jarventie played their 2020-2021 season in Liiga. In 48 games, Jiri The Jackal Smejkal scored 9 goals (26 points, -9) while Jarventie scored 14 goals (25 points, +4).
