You make it seem like all taxes do is give out free money to lazy people.

No, not really. Taxes play an important part in a society. Taxes are supposed to provide services which everyone likes or needs. The only problem is when you are running a deficit, due to issues like mismanagement, Ornge boondoggle, Billion dollar Gas plant Scandal, tax dollars that are meant to provide services end up being flushed away, or servicing the interest on a debt load that the Liberals and their supporters don't seem concerned about, this is what I have a problem with.

You seem to be referring to welfare which gives money to lazy people. That's different.

While there are some who take advantage, services like welfare and disability are important social safety nets that help a lot of people through rough patches in their lives.

He was going there with Stevie Y.

I coached Stevie Y for 2 years in soccer, best player on the field, won the city champioship, if we won 2-1 he scored both goals, if we won 9-1 he did'nt score any.

I would rather err on the side that lets people take advantage instead of the side that leaves people with nothing

Thing is, Toronto is call Hogtown for a reason. they love handouts and hog all the provincial money. What they get for roads, infrastructure, services, etc...because they know the Liberals will give them what they want.

Ottawa has to fight for every red penny. Look at how Ottawa voted. Hudak says no to further LRT and Ottawa gets hammered.

That's the problem with this province. Because of the population of Toronto vs the rest of the province, all politicians have to do to get elected is take Hogtown.

Simple fact is, all people are greedy. If someone is offering you free goodies (even if you know the price down the road will be a whopper) the first instinct is to take it and run. Look what happened to personal debt as son as credit cards were invented.

Problem is, it's not just about the goodies these governments hand out. It's the continuing cost of to run and maintain all that extra infrastructure. Sure, those shiny new buildings with impressive-looking architecture look great and give cities something to brag about...but when you factor in the annual cost for upkeep...you're in big financial trouble.

Same thing happened in Ottawa. During the debate it was all about what kind of goodies will Ottawa get? How much is our piece of the pie? We don't wanna pay for the LRT, we want Queens Park to pay to build it! (But then, who pays to keep it running? Local taxpayers...)

Everyone really needs to take a step back and ask do we really need that? Can we afford to maintain that? What about those sewers and water treatment plants that are so old, they're making people sick (some cities have water pipes over a century old - in Boston, Quebec City, you're looking at sections of the city with 200+ y.o. systems...and we wonder why so many people get sick). What about those bridges and other infrastructure we already have which are in disrepair to the point of being dangerous? How do we pay for that and add shiny new toys? Who pays for all of this? How long can we dump sewage into local rivers until things are so bad we've permanently compromised our health?

Canada has so many roads, so much other infrastructure, so many government programs, etc.....there is so much to pay for and maintain. We really have to think long and hard before adding more to the list.

I see where you are coming from, but I actually think LRT is a fantastic idea. Anything that makes it easier for people to leave the car at home and take transit helps us all in the long run. Ottawa in particular was designed with a much smaller population in mind, and the traffic can become horrendous. Lots of cars sitting and idling leads to lots of bad stuff happening that does not need to happen. People are need to get around, and are going to get around. The only thing we can do is provide more reasonable choices that hurt less over the long run.

That is not the only infrastructure project going on, and some are pretty wasteful. I just focused on LRT because it seems to be the focal point of a lot of discussion and debate.

Oh, the LRT itself is needed (for the reasons you mentioned) as Ottawa is so poorly designed for the population. The problem is, these elections are always about what kind of goodies communities will get.

It just feel like people think politicians are bringing down gifts from the gods, and hardly anyone looks at the consequences down the road.

So much bling isn't needed, but when most people are marking that X, it goes to whoever is making the biggest promises.

Sounds like every party's platform.

PC's: "You pay too much in taxes? We'll give you tax cuts! What's that, you want to know how we'll afford it? Shut up, we'll tell you after you elect us!"

LIBs: "You like the status quo? WE WON'T EVER CHANGE ANYTHING! What's that, you want to know how we'll afford it? Shut up, we'll tell you after you elect us!"

NDP: "You want social services? HAVE EVERY SOCIAL SERVICE IN THE WORLD, HAHAHA! What's that, you want to know how we'll afford it? Shut up, we'll tell you after you elect us!" (<--- does not apply to this past most recent ON election)

lol, pretty much.

Wish society & politics would evolve beyond that.

To be fair Hudak did make it fairly clear the consequences of cutting the budget and fixing the deficit.

And then he lost huge.
