Morally, you may disagree with it, but the league wants to get viewership to rival those sports (or even come anywhere close), having people bet in games theoretically makes more people watch

Exactly. I knew a guy who doesn't know anything about sports, but he is addicted to all sorts of gambling and he put down a crapload of money into NBA and NFL bets.
