With Semin getting 5x7 from Carolina, does Toronto offer something similar to Kessel?

It's $7Mx5 years, but damn, I didn't see that until just now. Sure seems like it would be the best comparable

My bad, corrected the numbers.

7mil seems about right for Kessel. Without Perry or Getzlaf coming our way we have more $$$ available for Kessel.

I personally think he has earned it and has shown a much more complete game this season.

Alexander Semin definitely just set the market comparable for Phil Kessel. Very similar players with a similar skill-set. Kessel is younger and has been more consistently productive, but Semin has the higher highs -- and the lower lows.

I would be happy if GM David Nonis signed Kessel to the exact same deal.

Kessel having an off goal-scoring year with the rest of the team as a whole playing well is the best case scenario for us.

Hopefully drops Kessel's next deal slightly while not really having a major effect on our season.

If we can do Kessel for somewhere between 6.5-7 for 5/6 years I'm all for it.

I'm happy with paying Kessel 6-7 million as I've said in the other threads. He's younger and much better than Semin IMO, as well rounding out his game slowly and steadily.

If we can get Kessel for just 7mil that'll be a bargain.

Kid's on his way to challenging the top-10 in scoring for the 2nd year in a row, at age 25.

we better be signing him for 8yrs, though.

This thread will be fun to look back on after Kessels no show in the playoffs.

Anything more than 7 million, unless on a significantly shorter-term deal would be overpayment. I'm probably in the minority here but I just don't think Kessel is that great. He goes invisible way too much for my liking, and his 2-way game and ineffectiveness on the boards gets tiresome.

If we do sign him for a long-term deal, I foresee us fans eventually running him out of town for those exact reasons. Perhaps I'm wrong, we'll see.

Kessel better than Semin? Uhhhh.... no. Semin is better in every aspect of the game except skating: shot, pass, stickhandling, defensively (by miles). I love Kessel, but I'd rather have Semin. But even more than that, I'd love to have both.

Don't we do that for all our players. What else is new?

Yeah, and that is despite his slow start.

He has his shortcomings against teams like the Bruins but I bet a lot of players struggle against the Bruins...it's not a good reason to trade him for picks/prospects.

I hope we can get him under 7 but anything near it is good.
