This is a huge upset no matter how you put it. The gap between Canada and Germany is that big. This would be like Malta beating Spain in soccer in a World Cup KO game. Even if Spain could only use their guys in foreign leagues, theyd still be huge favorites.

I don't think it's quite that big but it is an upset.

Canada would win the Spengler Cup annually if it was like that.

:) And Swedish team were so bad losing to Germany :sarcasm:

Funny how it is.

its not just that, its the fact that sweden always lose against weaker teams, slovakia 2010, belarus 2002, team europe 2016 etc. no other top nation keep losing against weaker teams in important games like sweden does.

Big congratulation to German hockey! At least an Olympic Silver. Got to be thw biggest day ever for German hockey. Everybody knows that there some guys from the NHL missing in this tournament, but an olympic medal is an olympic medal.

All those excuses from Canadians miss the point. Everyone knows this isn’t the best Canada has to offer and that would be a fine excuse if you had lost to Russia or Sweden but you lost to Germany.

NHL washouts and AHL guys come into DEL or the Swiss league and often are easily the best players. The best Canadians in Euro leagues should beat Germany 9 out of 10 times. And this Germany is missing their NHL guys as well who make a HUGE quality difference for Germany too.

This! Great post.

Also took a look at who Germany may be missing:

Draisaitl (PPG NHL forward), Rieder and Kuhnhackl (depth NHL forwards)
Seidenberg & Holzer (No. 6-7 NHL dmen)
Greiss & Grubauer (serviceable NHL backups)

Would be disingenuous to say they weren't also affected by the NHL ban, but they're probably only really missing Greiss & Draisaitl... Canada missed 23 players...

Congrats Germany! You guys were the better team through the first two periods and deserved the win!

As a Canadian, I actually prefer the tournament this way - level the playing field and make each game interesting to watch! Would not be opposed to taking all professional hockey players out of the Olympics.

As a hockey fan I want to see the best players in the Olympics, period.

It‘s our Miracle. Sure, no NHL Players is a huge factor, but our players there are still not as good as players from other countries. But we have a team, a team that plays many games with nearly the same formation.

Today is a day to celebrate, it‘s the biggest success we archieved till now, but probably for all time. I hope some of our players get the opportunity to play in better Leagues now...

Thank you guys, you are amazing!!!

PROST!!!!!!!!
They didn't even qualify for Sotschi. And now it's at least silver.

No NHL makes this tournament way more exciting and unpredictable in terms of who places where. Can't just assume Canada in the finals.

So whilst there was no NHLers whomst we all know of, did you still enjoy the hockey as much or the same as past Olympics?

What’s meaningful for Canada now? World Cup ? Please..

Nope, not the World Cup.

No one hated it more than we did with that abomination of an Under 23 team.

Until we get a senior-level tournament where all (healthy) NHLers are available to compete for their own countries, nothing is.

You know this already - you're not new to HFBoards.

If we did not hear this from the US side when they lost to Czech's, then I don't wanna hear it from the Canadians. If we did hear it from the US side (or even Sweden for that matter) then by all means whine it out.
Nobody ever expects USA to win gold. Canada is always expected to win gold. Its quite different actually.

In terms of not knowing Canada would walk right to the finals, yes. Am I disappointed Canada lost? Of course, I always want them to win. But this made things more interesting, for sure.

More exciting than watching this lineup?
Marchand Crosby Bergeron
Tavares McDavid Stamkos
Benn Sheifele Seguin
Hall Mackinnon Giroux
Kieth Doughty
Vlasic Burns
Subban Pietrangelo
Price
Holtby...

Yeah... No
