Was that Maria Sharapova?

Or just someone who looks similar?

How could you mix this woman with Sharapova :rant::rant:

You know for the longest time I really didn't give a royal **** about this tournament. And so did a lot of Canadians that I had spoken with over the years for that matter as well. For Canada it was the Canada Cup (and now Word Cup) and the Olympics which was really all that mattered. This tourney has always been seen as some sort of Euro thingy but now I believe it is finally starting to gain some steam over here in North America. It's still a still meh but we'll see...

Ironically, the WHC got a lot more media attention in Canada during the late 1970s and 1980s because it was one of the few times when we got to see the Soviets and Czechs in action, even if Canada was sending a mishmash of a team that almost always lost.

After the fall of communism it dropped off in importance and only in the last 10 years has it started to pick up again.

I don't regard it as being nearly as important as best-on-best but nor is it completely useless. There are usually a fair number of top players and the results are some indication of where hockey nations stand.

When Team Canada is down a goal in crunch time, our forecheck becomes unstoppable. I'd say its one of our defining characteristics. The biggest mistake a team can do is revert to a more passive attack as Russia did today.

Similiar. If I'm not wrong it just might be one of the players wife/girlfriend/mother since the russian team has had a section full of them for every game. Judging from the background it seems as if it's a VIP-room behind so.

I think it's Pelagea, Telegin's wife. She's a famous singer.

Forechecking and speed, I'd say. Canada cranked up the speeds in the 3rd.

The World Championship is the Russian Stanley Cup, largely because it's the only Men's Tournament they have a legit shot at winning these days.

That's why it feels good that Canada beat them.

:)

I agree with that. This is a true statement. The Russians have not won a Best on Best Tournament since the 1981 Canada Cup. They have failed in every Best on Best tournament since that time 36 years ago- 1987 Canada Cup, 1991 Canada Cup, 1996 World Cup, 1998 Olympics, 2002 Olympics, 2004 World Cup, 2006 Olympics, 2010 Olympics, 2014 Olympics, and 2016 World Cup. I do not count the World Hockey Championship as Best on Best, even though it is great hockey. It is the only Men's tournament they have a chance to win. That is why i ignore the Soviet dominance in the World Championships. They were beating up everyone's amateurs, when the best players were in the NHL. It feels good to beat them with our Backup Goalies, especially since they take this tournament very seriously. Well done Team Canada.

You right.
Big win for Canada and big big loss for Russia.

This is good to know, random guy in an armchair gloating to compensate for something in your life.

A team with Malkin, Kucherov, Tarasenko, Ovechkin, Panarin, Kovalchuk and Kuznetzov on it has a chance to win any tournament.

The fact is, no such thing as a best on best exists. There is no official list of best on best tournaments. Everyone has their own opinion, and no two opinions are the same. For example, Russian fans would say you left the 1979 Challenge Cup and 1987 Rendezvous '87 off because the Soviets won. Russian fans only consider the '81 Canada Cup as legitimate because they sent "B" team in '76 and '91 and European refs were banned from the Medal Round in '84 and '87. The Olympics don't qualify because the sample size is too small. There is no commonly held definition of the concept of best on best - therefore, it doesn't exist in reality.

Sweden usually have a very tough time in important games against Canada, and CAN turn around against Russia was impressive. It would be sweet to see Sweden win #10 (world champ) against Canada, but my expectations are low.

Those fans would be pretty stupid to think playing the NHL (not Canada!) is the same as playing a tournament with the top hockey national teams

Wow...comical if it wasn't so sad; totally asinine

There is commonly held views on hockey's best-on-best tournaments actually (for example the Olympics since 1998 have been best-on-best, the Worlds have never been best-on-best)

You are a big hypocrite. Before the 2014 Olympics- you said the tournament was a Best on Best tournament, unlike the World Cup. After Russia choked and had a quick exit, you made excuses. The fact of the matter is, whether you or any other Russian likes it or not- Russia has failed to win Best on Best, since the 1981 Canada Cup.

Stop talking about sample size and other garbage. Before the 2014 Olympics- you said that tournament was a best on best, and Canada will struggle on the big ice. Canada did not fail, but Russia did- leaving the Sochi Bear in Russia, and Russian fans to cry and be dismayed. So sad.

World Championships were best on best until Canada p***yed out and stopped sending NHLers because the USSR was dominating.

Well, what can one say, absolutely devastating loss, bloody frustrating. But Then again, It's a part of the charm with our beloved russian.
Canada is special, they have a extra gear (no other country can match) when they up their game. [MOD] I myself, will always hate that (ie. #HCmen) but im the first one to admit that its the most effective style of hockey.
So, congratz to all gloating canadians, and even more so to all of you not gloating. I Will however cheer for you in the final, especially for Wayne!

Kuzyas goal OMG!!!

Hmmm ...I remember when Canada first wanted to add, like 2 journeymen, ex NHLers to a WC team , IIHF agreed BUT , after CCCP had a hissy fit, it was IIHF brass who p***yed out/ reneged on their earlier agreement...

Canada withdrew from international competition in protest...and it was NOT until 1972 Summit Series ( which was none of IIHF doing ) that things were put back on a semi-even ( read fair ) keel...

NOT sure when u think Canada STOPPED sending NHLers to worlds? In the bad old days of BuNNy Ahearn and company Canada wasn't allowed to send ANY of their NHL, or even ex-NHLers
