My retired parents want to move to the country. A younger man that used to work for me, is now an agent for the area's largest real estate company, yet they won't use him as an agent. How do I convince them?

Just sell it yourself

Its an option but not I guess. They paid 69k for it some 30 years ago. Last year was appraised for 350k and now this year it's almost half a million with a new major highway 10 minutes away.

When you're talking that many dollars over a percentage I want a guy I know and trust.

Why won't they use him?

Tell them to go with the guy you want and give him some time and then if they don't like him they can go to the woman they like.

This is one of those things where if you can't make an extremely plain case for your point of view, they probably won't change theirs.

In other words, if there's a good reason to think he would do a better job, then it should be simple enough to show why you feel that way. Otherwise, what's your reason for wanting them to switch?

Real estate brings out a lot of emotion in people. It's probably just best to let your parents use their choice unless there is something verifiably wrong with that person.

Why don't they trust you?

In seriousness, I think this is the sort of thing where there's more than just trust involved in the equation.

I mean reverse the situation, you're trying to sell your house and your dad basically tells you to use a guy he used to work with as your agent, even though you've already picked an agent you like. What's your reaction to that? "I trust you dad!" or "Uh, thanks, but I'll let you know if I need help with this"? I think most people feel at least a little bit of privacy invasion when a family member tries to exert an influence on a major life decision.

Who is the lady? A qualified real estate agent or some weirdo who talks to herself on the bus?

She's qualified and works for Remax. But so does my guy. And I know my guy has way more resources to work with because I've done work myself for that "branch" of Remax and the owner of it.
