3 of the worst bottom 5 teams in the entire league standings Vancouver, Ottawa and Montreal are from the former North, and one of the other bottom 5 teams is the expansion Kraken.
But one of those 3 went to the almighty Stanley Cup Final. lol!

All that incredible depth the Habs have..... :propeller

On one hand he's praising the Habs for their depth and for their playoff run, while simultaneously making fun of the fact that the Leafs are beating up on them because they are a bottom 5 team.

This is getting beyond annoying..

Montreal was a juggernaut. Wonder how they would have fared if not gifted a final 4 spot?

Normally, they don't even let the 18th overall place team in the regular season standings compete in the NHL playoffs, but the league had to change the rules due to the North Div not having enough teams strong enough to qualify on their own merits, so Montreal was gifted a playoff spot to begin with from the leagues weakest Div.

North was not the weakest division, and the NHL did not change any rules to gift playoff spots. The NHL playoffs has often featured a team outside of the top-16 in league rank, because there are divisional and conference criteria for qualification. A team outside of the top-16 made the playoffs in 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2016, etc.

Those 3 teams are definitely horrible but the other 4 teams are all either first or second in their division. The west was definitely the worst division last year imho.

And let's not forget 1 of those 3 "horrible" teams Mess keeps blathering about is the Habs, who he praised as a model that the Leafs should have followed, in that they have genius management and coaching there.

Overall great start thanks to Soup. Interesting that they are 3 points behind last year's pace after 20 games. Not bad given Matty was scoring at will last year.

Not bad at all considering the easier matchups they had last year.

Interesting to look at.

Last year through 20 they were #2 in goals per game with the #2 shooting percentage, and 13th defensively with the #16 save percentage. #2 in expected goals for and #12 against, #5 in xgf%.

This year they're 25th offensively with the #27 shooting percentage, and #3 defensively with the #3 save percentage. They're #2 in expected goals for and #5 in expected goals against, and #1 in xgf%.

Zeke just a question for you.
How much credit do we give Keefe for the PK? I know he has said he lets the assistants handle the special teams, but our PK was good with Hakstol and now it's good with Dean as well. I know tactically there are differences, but the result is the same.

Hard to tell. But the PK has been very good since the moment Keefe took over, no matter the assistants.

True. It would be interesting to see who has to do the system execution for the PK. Dean probably does that but it's up to Keefe to use the right guys.

The head coach has the biggest hand in every aspect of special teams at the end of the day. Keefer is the most underrated coach in the league.

Looking at the PK last season + this season and Toronto's rank league-wide:

Fewest Shots Against/60: 4th in the NHL
Fewest Scoring Chances Against/60: 6th in the NHL
Fewest Expected Goals Against/60: 4th in the NHL
Goals Against/60: 13th in the NHL

Why the discrepancy between the underlying and actual numbers?

Save% on the PK among the three Leafs goalies who have played more than 4 games over the same stretch:

Campbell: .917 in 38 starts
Hutchinson: .871 in 10 starts
Andersen: .793 in 24 starts

.871 on the pk is actually pretty average and respectable from Hutchinson too. I think the ideal number is .890, if someone knows the exact average feel free to post it.

Not gonna work out the exact average but since the start of last season:

1. 90.24
2. 89.47
3. 89.02
4. 88.82
5. 88.38

Midpoint:
16. 86.58

Bottom 5 team save% on the PK in the NHL
28. 84.57
29. 84.54
30. 83.23
31. 82.92
32. 81.27

For the second year in a row. The previous year they beat out Pitt, making the playoffs in the play in round that they had otherwise no business being a part of.
