So a friend of mine is helping start a hockey column where he brings fans in to debate on both sides of an issue that has to with their team.

The inaugural article is going to have to do with Kovalchuk and the Devils. To make things short he's looking for 2 Devils fans to debate on the side that Kovalchuk leaving is positive for the team, and 2 fans to debate that him leaving is negative for the team

I'm only making this post because starting this column finally made him stop lurking and get an account, but cause he's new he can't make threads yet  You can PM him if you're interested, he'll post right after me

Alright so apparently his account is taking awhile to make so for now you can just PM me if you're interested.

As a side note I thought the prefix 'Player Discussion" fit best because that's what eventually will be happening but if that's not the right prefix can a mod please change it?

Just copy and paste the four threads here about Ilya's retirement. It got REALLY out of hand towards the end.

Kovalchuk was terrible his entire time in New Jersey and set the organization back 5 years that is all you need to know... there is no debate, he is the epitome of all that is "loser". He was a loser his entire career.

Yea.. not going to lie but it's pretty damn hard to argue that what Kovalchuk did was right.

Doesn't really seem like the best angle to take on this.

Should do:
Devils fans arguing why Kovy leaving is a positive
Devils fans arguing why Kovy leaving is a negative

No right answer per say (because the answer is both depending on length of perspective) but at least you'd get some good material there and an actual 'debate'. Right now, I can write you a column as to why what Kovy did is wrong but also best for the team... they aren't exclusive points.

1/10

You can do better

Good idea, that's definitely a better way to go about it, I'll edit the OP. You're absolutely welcome to be a part of the debate, just send me a PM. Lol setting up my buddy's account is a bit delayed so he's taken over mine for now

better yet, if you really want a good column idea that will be fun to read and won't be overly-homerish...

instead of getting the one affected home-base to debate both sides, you involve a rival fan base.

As in:
Devils fan arguing that the Devils will be better long-term because of Kovalchuk leaving
Rangers fan arguing that the Devils won't be better long-term

you get some zest there.

Ok I have my account up and running now so if you want to be a part of the discussion private message me and i'll let you know details

Can't we just have the discussion here? That way you would get lots of differing options and you can decide which opinion has the most validity?

How about we just lock this thread and forget the Russian. NO ONE CARES

Some people care. I care.. I'm extremely interested to see what the Kovalchuk effect really meant for this team....we saw two years of no Parise and only Kovalchuk, now we get to see no Kovalchuk.... I'm willing to bet we are better than either of the two years with only Kovalchuk.

Jim your the only one who really wants to beat this subject to death.

You were right on a few things but your not going to keep pounding it to death until people agree with you, that the Russian was NEVER good for the Devils. Well you can that's clearly up to you but it really is getting old. I think time well spent is talking about their future with the players that want to be here.

10/10 would read again.

In theory I would tend to agree... but it is very important to point out to the zealots how so wrong they were....it is important so when they are arguing for the "next great thing" they can be reminded about how wrong they were about the "last great thing"

This needs to be kept on the front page so we can remember how blinded some were over a little bling and no matter how much failure was in their face the excuses never stopped....maybe some can grow and learn not to be so stupid next time

I don't agree with Jim that Kovalchuk was purely a negative, but I could be convinced depending on team performance over the course of the next season. Kovalchuk is the kind of talent that you have to have to go deep - you have to have a Stevens, Niedermayer, or Brodeur. You need HOF caliber talent to win cups, and I saw Kovalchuk as that talent. Still do.

But there's no question that we started doing things differently after acquiring him - under Lemaire and under DeBoer. Hugely differently. Part of that is just you pay your best players to play and be your best players, though.

I dunno. We'll see.

Kovy was our best player!!! It was so clear holy **** this is scary. We made it to the cup during his time here. He's such loser we need more 'mericans.

Curious who Carolina's HoF type player was? Staal? Ward? Maybe Brindamour? Who was LA's HoF talent last year? Not sure...

But an offensively talented forward by himself has never won anything. From Marcel Dionne to Dale Hawerchuk to Pat LaFontaine to Paval Bure to Wayne Gretzky himself...no talent up front wins without a team. And when you are paying a forward 100 million, it's kind of tough to assemble a team

he's a phenomenal player who did everything asked of him to conform to Devils hockey. he wasn't used right, and quit on the team like a little *****. did I miss anything?
