Waived: [SEA] G Philipp Grubauer waived by the Kraken (cleared)

With so many goalies failing to live up to their "average starter" type contracts, I think there needs to be a market recalibration for goaltenders. Being somewhere in between a good platoon guy and starter for a few years shouldn't mean 5 or 6 million with term. It's happened way too many times.

Georgiev going to join them soon?

Husso already been there all year. Lots of bad veteran goalies who aren’t even *that* old just absolutely binned this season.
Husso only had one good season in his career, so it's not like he just fell off. His rookie season was horrible and then his second season was the one good year and got him this contract.

Georgiev honestly only had one good season also, and that was his first year in Colorado.

Though you could argue he had a decent year or two as the Rangers backup, where Husso didn't have any seasons even decent outside of his second year in St. Louis/second year in the league.

Grubauer had nothing but good seasons before going to Seattle. Then he completely fell off and was outplayed by every other goalie they had, other than the year they had Martin Jones.

And he looks about ready to join Martin Jones.

About f***in time.

I was shocked when it didn’t happen two weeks ago. Jarry got put on waivers instead.

He’s toast. I often times think of the 2020 version of Cory Schneider, but he’s probably as bad as the 2025 version of Cory Schneider, who doesn’t play anymore.

The idiots in Seattle should have probably bought him out last summer.

And at the very least the idiots shouldn’t have started him opening night and literally alternated between him and Daccord for the first couple weeks of the season.

And they announced that Daccord extension I think the day after the season opener? That extension had to have sealed Grubauer’s fate beyond this year. He shouldn’t have been given the start opening night on merit, when he lost his job already LAST YEAR to Daccord. So why were they alternating between him and Grubauer to begin with?

wouldn’t be the first time Disco Dan looked like a clown. Just the first time in Seattle.

It is indeed a catastrophic decision by Seattle to keep going with Grubauer this long. But it seems like not a Disco Dan decision, probably on Ron Francis.

The coach just wants a good goalie and doesn't care about contracts, it's unfair to Bylsma to have had to deal with Grubauer.

Freidman reported a couple of weeks ago that ownership has been meddling with Francis, so not sure if he's just a yes man at this point or if he's involved in some kind of power struggle. From the sounds of that he likely won't be GM next year.

Friedman reported that Francis wanted to hire Todd McLellan, but ownership vetoed it and went with Bylsma instead. There were other things he had said there was an internal struggle over, but namely that was the one I remembered.

How'd I miss that report. On the podcast? Will have to look into it.

That's Bylsma?!?

What happened to his hair?

Time is an opponent that remains undefeated.
I don't wanna turn this into a thread criticizing Bylsma's horrible aging over the past few years, which I've done several times this year after not seeing him the last few years because he's been out of the league for about 7 years before this. He's not even that much older than I am.

But he's AGED a TON since he last coached the Sabres. I don't even remember him looking that old 4 or 5 years ago when he was an assistant with NHL Detroit and an analyst on NHL Network or maybe it was even NBC a few times during the covid shortened season.

His hair went from being kind of thin and receding to just disappearing overnight and he now looks very old for several reasons. Even the suits he wears look very 70s-esque.

He now looks way too much like the actor Richard Jenkins.

The cap keeps going up but that 5 or 6 years for $5-6M AAV has been the boilerplate contract for over a decade for average starters in UFA or we think we've got a guy in RFA, the declining cap % is the adjustment

Wow. The Seattle fans called this in the GDT last night
I honestly thought this was coming after he was yanked in back to back games like 2 weeks ago? Maybe it was 3 weeks ago? However long ago that was, last night was his first game since then. So I figured if last night didn't do it then it's probably not gonna happen this year. I don't know anything about their AHL guys (I don't think anyone else in their organization has played a second of NHL ice time ever other than Daccord and Grubauer) but they can't be any worse than him.

Two weeks ago he allowed like 6 goals in 35 minutes and got yanked. Then the next game he allowed 3 goals in the first 6 minutes of the game and got yanked. I couldn't believe he wasn't waived after that.

Pretty sure he was going to be be bought out next off-season even before this move.

I know we are out of the playoffs for this season, but not having him start games is the best way to go. The team just does not trust him in net and for a good reason. He gives up the most inopportune goals and deflates the teams confidence.

Not excusing our D either, but I think most of us Kraken fans knew this was coming.

Just don't talk to Bruins fans right now, lol.

As a ducks fan I’m a little offended

Just a crazy decline. Iirc, he was like second in career SV% among active goalies when he signed this deal. For a while it was looking like Seattle was going to make any goalie look bad, but Daccord succeeding while Grubauer’s gotten worse makes that kind of go out the window
