Bryan McCabe: 30, Toronto Maple Leafs. Like Ed Jovanovski (whom McCabe replaces), a high-risk, talented player. Hopefully he can recover properly from his groin injury. He should be in pretty good form, though, considering all the minutes he's played this season. He's having a breakout season and I think he deserved to be on the team.

Nice to see Scotty still has his wits about him. He knows a little something about defenceman.

Plays the same minutes as Pronger and Lidstrom and has the better +/- on an inferior team.

Kind of a disappointing analysis of the team by Bowman. He was far too diplomatic. I did like his comments about needing to find linemates for Bertuzzi and Heatley. Something about the forward construction of this team doesn't mesh.

Clearly Bowman isn't as enthusiastic about the forwards as he is about the defence.

I think that McCabe will be an 'equal-opportunity defensemen', meaning that both teams will have scoring chances when he on the ice.... :sarcasm:

Al strachan as Scotty Bowmans Parrot,

For a guy who is having such a good year, Bryan McCabe has an awful lot of detractors.

There is a widespread feeling that, on the Olympic stage, McCabe's defensive liabilities will put Team Canada in a precarious position.

But the Team Canada selectors -- a group which includes the coaches who will determine how McCabe is to be used -- are not overly concerned.

Because no one in the National Hockey League wants to be publicly critical of any players, they don't want to talk for attribution.

But not for attribution, there are those who will say that for starters, McCabe will get better support from his Team Canada forwards than he gets from the Maple Leafs.

At the Olympic level, defence is a team-wide concept and not all the Leafs are conscientious when it comes to fulfilling their defensive responsibilities. As a result, McCabe won't be left to fend for himself quite as often.

And if he does cough up a scoring opportunity, he'll have Marty Brodeur behind him, which is also a step up. If it weren't, Ed Belfour would be on Team Canada.

But the organizers feel that because McCabe is such a devastating force on the power play, his offensive contributions will more than make up for any defensive concerns

:biglaugh: So true. I'd rather he didn't step on the ice, thank you.

he'll be on the ice for powerplays and when team CA has comfortable leads and need to rest their defensive d-men. except that blake and pronger are both ailing and may need less ice time. and it is quinn coaching, so ...

That means nothing . Quinn benced his dog Cujo last Olympics.

after the last 2 games I'd rather see McCabe handing out towels in the tunnel than dress

Politics 101:

Dion Phaneuf>>>>>>Bryan McCabe...right now

McCabe's history on big ice shows he shouldn't be on that team, the last two games against "less than steller" players proves it.

/covers eyes when the real talented forwards come down on him in the metal round.

Actually Pronger and Lidstrom both have better +/-'s then McCabe, so I don't know where you get your facts from (Jim Ralph maybe?)

That post is over a week old. Check the facts on that day. But I will update the facts.

Look at the stats. There are only 4 players with over 28 minutes per game.

Lidstrom +6
Pronger +4
McCabe +2
Kaberle -2

Only three of them are plus players.

http://www.nhl.com/nhlstats/stats?s...iewName=summary

Now look at the teams GF 5 on 5 and GA 5 on 5

Det 112 81
Edm 100 108
Tor 85 105

Obviously Pronger and Lidstrom should be on the ice for more goals. (Plus mcCabe missed 9 games) and have much better +/- but they don't.

Now look at non-PP points.

Lidstrom 16 GP 57
Pronger 8 GP 58
McCabe 19 GP 48

He generates more offence than Pronger or Lidstrom on a team that has trouble scoring goals.

It is true, stats are for losers.

Do you have any stats on McCabe's defensive peformance the last two games? Just curious. :dunno:

I love McCabe's scouting report "Has cut down on his propensity to make mistakes in the defensive zone but still needs more work in that department".

We talk about defensive play, and you bring up offensive numbers. Could it be you have no argument and are too stubborn to admit McCabe is a major defensive liability?

If he was a major defensive liability why aren't his +/- numbers far worse than Lidstrom's and Prongers when they all play over 28 minutes. It could be due to McCabes offense except that the leafs are far worse than Edmonton and Detroit offensively 5 on 5.

The numbers don't support the major defensive liability argument. Especially, when you consider the leafs as a team have a major 5 on 5 deficit and McCabe plays almost half the game.
