Hi,

I was looking at the Scott Niedermayer WJC stats and I was surpised to see that he didn't record any points in two tournaments, at 17 and 18 years old.

I know that this tournament is mostly a tournament for 19 years old, but I'm wondering how a third overall pick and an offensive defenseman like Niedermayer wasn't able to record a single point in 14 games on a two year span.

Does somebody could give me more information on why he went scoreless?

Niedermayer barely played in 1991 - he was the the clear 7th defenceman. In the de facto gold medal game against the Soviet Union, I don't believe he played a single shift.

In 1992 he was named to the tournament All-Star Team, so while the points weren't there his play was at least viewed as meeting/surpassing expectations. Remember though that this was one of the lowest-scoring and overall worst teams in Canadian history. They barely beat Germany and Switzerland (cannon fodder in that era), tied Finland and Sweden, lost to the U.S., and got dismantled by both the Czechs and CIS. I also seem to recall Sydor and Slaney getting the bulk of the PP time, but could be wrong about that.
