RIP. Did it mention what kind of work he was doing? I have a problem with all these players from my childhood passing on. Makes me feel older everytime.

Nevermind. Paper Plant accident. I always ask questions without thinking that the smart phone in my hand can answer the question if only it were used smartly...

Remember going to a Hartford Whalers Boston Bruins game in Hartford with a friend from my Coast Guard days (who was a Bruins fan) back in the mid 80's and Scot and Terry O'Reilly (I think it was his last year) got into a fight in the third period and it was a good one. O'Reilly was f***ing tough but Kleinendorst wasn't a pushover. It went on for a while and was pretty much a draw if I'm remember correctly. Maybe it's on youtube.

Anyway my buddy was a pretty good hockey player--played junior hockey for the Fitchburg Wallopers and had gotten a tryout with the Fredericton AHL team which back then was the Quebec Nordiques farm team. Hartford won by two or three goals.

Checked on youtube. There is a bout but it's not a long one. It was 24 years ago though--you get older and your memory turns to mush. There also might have been a second fight between them that night. Shit like that use to happen all the time.

Whalers and Bruins had some dandy battles....times sure have changed . They had one of the most vicious rivalries going there for a few years . LOL...Ulfie Sam. may have even been involved in a few .:D

Kleinendorst not just taking on O'Reilly but also at least 3 fights with Cam Neely and a couple with Jay Miller. He one punches Cam Neely in one of them. Derek Sanderson the Bruins color man making all kinds of excuses for his Bruins team.

The story I heard about Sanderson---when the WHA comes along they were enticing NHL players with a lot more money than they were use to seeing and the Philadelphia team signed Sanderson to a big deal for the time but right from the beginning things went like shit. Sanderson didn't get along with his new teammates or with the coaching and management staff and so a month or so into the deal they come to a mutual agreement to void the contract and eventually Derek's back in the Bruins locker room--and Terry O'Reilly is a rookie and one night a furious Derek on returning to the Bruins locker room is throwing shit about and some of it hits O'Reilly who gets up and beats the shit out of him......and the next thing you know Derek is wearing a Rangers jersey. Derek was good entertainment back then though---I remember him being interviewed by Jim Gordon on TV between periods one night and he must have gone through three cigarettes during the interview. I also remember him and Bob Plager having words and Plager then suckering him. Sometimes too much talk and not enough action. The Plager brothers were a trip too---they'd even fight each other.

As I recall, Sanderson was really good early, as a young Bruin 2-way C, on early-70s Cup teams, but more interesting off ice, than on, after that

He was arguably the best 3rd liner in the league and someone comparable to Sean Avery on and off the ice. He lived it up like a real celebrity and he was a major league elite agitator and asshole. He's also the guy who sets up Bobby Orr's iconic Stanley Cup winning goal the one where Orr is flying through the air. His lifestyle probably shortened his career---the partying, the booze and maybe etc., and as I mentioned smoking cigarettes between periods. He didn't really take care of his body. In his auto-biography (I think it was ghostwritten by Fischler) he tells this story about his dad catching him one day brushing his teeth---asks him why when he's only going to lose them anyway. He was one gnarly dude. The turning point in his career is really that year he signed with the WHA--that season starts him on a slow decline. I think he always identified as a Bruins player anyway.
