I love when people think they are saying smart things and give no context whatsoever.

The people who would consider themselves "anti-advanced stats" generally want heavy forecheck, big&tough gritty players, dirty zone hockey. They basically want no-nonsense old school hockey. The Panthers play like that.

But, the tweet points out that they are wrong in thinking that the Panthers are in opposition to advanced stats. The Panthers are/were built and (it's rather obvious) that the on-ice strategy is informed by advanced stats. The most old school hockey team of the decade is an advanced stat team.

The mistake here is equating advanced stats with small periphery playing style. It's true that at first, advanced stats opened the door to small skilled players to get drafted and play. But teams' proprietary stats now have so much information, that it's well beyond that point.

For example, Ekblad flipping the puck out of the zone almost immediately almost every time is "an advanced stat play". It doesn't "look" like what people think when they think advanced stats, but it is.
