Blue Jays Discussion: Save some runs for the other games, guys. (Jays score team record 28 runs in Friday night drubbing of Red Sox. Yes, that says 28. In one game)

I think they traded Betts at a decent time in terms of where his career has gone since, but the return was terrible.

They traded him at his peak seasons and should’ve returned much more.

If the return had been appropriate it would be looked at as a decent trade because, while he’s still been very good, he isn’t as good as he was at his peak.

I think Castillo and Montas should be the priorities unless one of the Marlins young pitchers becomes available. We need a dominant starter to go 1-2-3 with Gausman and Manoah in a 5-game series. That allows us to have Stripling in a swing role and not have to rely on Berrios to win us a game.

For relievers I'd love to get Bard/Robertson and Chafin,

Lefty bat, sign Conforto or trade for Joey Wendle if we want more positional versatility.

Yes it is. A draft would really help lower budget teams who constantly rank. The Jays have been one of the higher spending teams when it comes to the international market. We also have great talent evaluators. Getting Moreno for 20-25k is an absolute steal.

“Tank”

Plus we have a few guys coming up that we can get draft pick compensation for if we don't resign them so I'm glad that system isn't going away. Within the next 2 years Stripling, Teo, Gurriel, and Chapman.

Stripling would never be qualified.

You don't think they'll be willing to offer a guy 1 year ~19 million dollars when he's been a 3.10 ERA, 3.12 FIP pitcher this year and their rotation for next year is Manoah, Gausman, Berrios, and the corpse of Kukuchi?

I expect that to be offered and turned down in a heartbeat. Matz got 4 x 11 last year after being a 3.82 ERA, 3.75 FIP arm

I think the Jays would take their chances and qualify him. Issue is what team is going to sign a back of the rotation arm with draft pick compensation attached to him, especially when he’s looking for a multi year deal.

I might have been overdoing it by saying in a heartbeat. I brought the question up here a couple weeks back but no one responded. The issue would be the number of innings he's been accustomed to and giving up a pick to sign him. I can see arguments against it. But he's been enough of a godsend for us this year that I think you're fine with him accepting it if he took that route, whereas Matz I think most would have been really annoyed if he took it.

What is everyone’s prediction on what Atkins does by next Tuesday. I’ll go first ( Castillo or Montas and 2 power arms for the bullpen. Robertson and Bass are my guesses. Playoff rotation (Manoah/Gausman/Castillo) and from 6th inning on you can have a mix of Mayza/Cimber/Robertson/Bass/Romano. Too many righties would be the issue though

The cost is going to hurt a bit but clearly the team has a window here to go for it.

He's still been a 7 WAR/162 player in LA. An absolute superstar and one of the sport's best players. Led the NL in WAR in 2020 and has led LA to a WS.

It's crazy that a franchise with as much wealth as the Red Sox let him walk away in the middle of his prime.

Unfortunate but might make it easier to trade them. I bet at least one of these guys are gone by the deadline.

The tough decisions are other guys IMO. Orelvis and Groshans are either traded or definitely on the 40 man this offseason. Guys like Gabby Martinez and Tanner Morris are a lot tougher. In the article you can toss off all the guys they list as fringe guys and they've only got 6 open spots with the above 4 and Zulueta and Horwitz as other adds. Not sure how Beasley, Griffin, Hatch, Saucedo and Collins don't also count as 40 man fringe. You could even make the case that Castillo, Danner, and Vasquez are too if they're considering Richards fringe. If Ryu's contract isn't insured you might as well just punt him off the roster and eat the salary to get the extra roster spot too as it's doubtful he'll be healthy enough in 2023 to make much difference.

They didn’t do it for Matz last year so I doubt they do it for stripling this year. I’d be happy if they extended him and I think we’d all agree he’s earned it. But I don’t think he turns down the qualifier as quickly as you think

Have to think Merryweather, Thornton, and Kay are probably considered in there too.

If Ryu is on the IL the entire time, isn't he off of the 40-man anyways?

Doesn't really seem like too complicated of a situation to navigate, and the Jays will probably trade away some of the better fringe guys at this year's TDL to make it even easier.

No 60 day IL in the offseason(or 10 day/15 day for that matter). Injured guys go back to counting on the 40 man then. With only 2 guys FA this year shouldn't be a ton of holes to fill and between the article mine and your posts we've already made a list of 20 guys you wouldn't be too upset about tossing off the 40 man so there should be enough space that you can add who you want to I think

Which team is likely to give the Reds the best package for Castillo? What could they realistically get? — Matthew R.

Obviously, the teams with the deepest farm systems have the best shot, but you also need a general manager who will part with the prospects to land Castillo. The Dodgers, Blue Jays and Mariners are all willing and able. I think the Reds will get a package that includes three of an organization’s top-25 prospects.

I’ll ask the question on the mind of every Nats fan: Where does Josh Bell end up? Could Washington receive some decent pitching prospects in return? — Griffin H.

Bell will be traded. The Blue Jays, Rays, Astros and Mets are all possible landing spots. The Nationals will probably net a decent pitching prospect and a mid-level prospect in return.

You are given control over the Blue Jays for the next month. What moves would you make (or not make) to increase their World Series chances and window as much as possible? — Jason B.

I would make a serious run at Juan Soto and Luis Castillo. This Blue Jays team’s window to win a World Series extends three to four years, and it’s time to go for it. Can you imagine Soto hitting between Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the next several years.? The Blue Jays need a left-handed impact bat to better balance their lineup. They also need another quality starter, and Castillo is a difference-maker. The Blue Jays’ farm system is strong at the top and deep; they have the financial and prospect resources to get one of those stars, maybe even both. It’s go time.
